Adara went home earlier than the other kids. The thoughts of those poor dragons stuck in that small cage just burned the blood under her skin. That was not right. Now what would her mother do. He father would probably just as soon as kill the zoo keeper than to talk to them. Well that would be on his bad day, maybe. She thought a letter! Yes that is what she will do, write a letter. She sat down at the desk and started to write, as well as a 7 year old could.

Dear Zoo keeper person,

I am wanting to take this time to write about a horrifying thing I saw at your zoo. Did you know that the cute dragons you have in the lock up thing are too big for that little little space? They got no room for laying or playing. They have not enough to walk hardly. My brother says you take them out when the zoo closes. Well I was at the zoo late at night and I still saw them. I think it only write that you show some respek for these wonderful creatures and give them a much bigger cage. How you like it if you were stuck in a little cage with no room to do anything? I no I would not like it at all. I think you should know that there are concerned peoples out there. We worry about how they are treated. If you could write me back and let me no what your plans are to take care of this situwaytion, I would have much greatfulness for it.

signed me,
Adara Smythe, lover of all animals.

She looked upon it and smiled. She was pleased with the title she gave herself. She seen her dad and others write letters, they always had a title. She then folded the letter putting the family seal of Smythe on it, splatter of wax here and there were along the outside of it. She then went back to the zoo and dropped it off at the donation box. She then returned home and nestled in her bed. Soon sweet dreams of family outings with her family filled her head.

Oh, how wonderful, another letter. The zookeeper, Daz, smiled as he read the letter. What an intelligent little girl. he thought to himself as he looked at the obvious childlike handwriting. He was used to getting letters from children and enjoyed the innocence and truthfullness that those letters always brought. Children very rarely understood complicated issues such as governmental bureaucracy, but it was always best to be honest with children.

The letter he was supposed to send was the marked "SCRL" Standard Concern Return Letter. It read something like:

Dear Britainia Royal Zoo at Moonglow Patron,

We at the Britainia Royal Zoo at Moonglow appreciate your concerns. It is very imorotant that we address any and all questions and comments submmited to our staff concerning the wellfare of the animals within our care. Please understand that every measure to accomodate the creatures is taken into concideration with the seriousness that you yourself would want us to take. The zoo would like to asure you that none of the creatures are mistreated in any way. In fact, we go to great lengths to make sure that every creature, large or small, receives the very best in care.

Thanks for your concern,
BRZM Management

Daz frowned. "Oh, come on management, this is a little girl. I think we can do a little better than that" Daz thought as he tossed management's letter into the waste basket.

He then heard the voice of management saying, in a high pitched cracked and slightly sinister voice, "Just send the brat the head of the dragon. That'll shut her up". Daz sat in shock and amazement at management's cold response. He swung around to confront the voice, but there was no one in the room with him.

"Well I think thats a little drastic and I'll have no part in it. After all she does seem genuinly concerned for the welfare of our creatures. You may have forgotten what it was like to be a child, but I have not". Daz spoke in a harsh whisper to the empty office. The zookeeper shook his head violently to get the shrill voice out of his thoughts. He then decided that he had been working too hard and would write his own reply to Adara tommorrow. The zookeeper virtually ran out the front door of his office and headed home as fast as he could.

Daz, the zookeeper, wearily walked into his office just to the west of the zoo, tired from the days labor. He said he would respond to Adara's letter, and he meant it. The zookeeper looked around cautiously for any signs of management. He was alone. He gathered quill and parchment and wrote in a manner that he thought a child would understand:

Dear Adara, Lover of All Animals,

I am sorry for not writing this letter sooner. The zoo keeps us zookeepers very busy feeding, and caring for the animals. I did get your letter. I am happy to say that your brother is right. We do take the creatures out and give them some play time. We let them play every day at 5 or 5:30 in the morning by the eastern sun at a time when everyone is still asleep.

Also, we get some animals that are hurt. We make them better and release them. This is called rehabilitation. It is one of the main things that we do here at the zoo.

You are right. The zoo's rooms are too small. I have been asking management to enlarge all of the rooms in the zoo for some time. The animals should have more space. But, Management doesn't alway listen to me. And I don't always listen to Management. Management would not like me writing this letter, but I have to do what I think is right.

Thank you very much for your concern regarding the animals happiness. I share your concern. I will do what I can to make sure the animals are happy and smiling.

Your Friend,
Daz the Zookeeper,
Minister of Nature,
Moonglow Town Council

p.s. Support your local zoo.
