Lee arrived to her office in the Lycaeum in a fervor of excitement. What an exciting evening! She had just finished training drills with her guild mates and was pleasantly surprised to see how the guild was growing. So many new faces! And to top off an already good day, Lee had been promoted to Minister of Education! Lee dropped her satchel on her desk and flopped herself into her cozy reading chair. She kicked her sandals off under the desk and created some food. “Eck!” She blurted as a fully cooked chicken appeared. She threw it out the window to her swamp dragon, Toto. Toto gobbled it up happily. She tried the spell a few more times and was much happier with the apple, cheese and bread she created. She began to munch.
Things had been going very well. Daz had fully recovered from his nightmare and Rhiannon had been keeping her distance. Lee had come to terms with the fact that Rhiannon was going to be around, and from the way things were looking Rhiannon might be moving on soon. The citizens of Moonglow consisted mostly of scholarly individuals and had not been receptive to Rhiannon’s frivolous conversations. Rhiannon had always needed constant excitement in her life, and things were no different for her now. She had not yet approached any of the military citizens. So far, Daz and Lee had not mentioned Rhiannon’s presence to their guild mates. They had decided there was no need to alarm anyone just yet, and Lee was not prepared to discuss that part of her past. Although, she would do so if necessary.
Lee wiped her mouth gently with a napkin as she tossed the apple core out to a wild llama that had strolled up next to Toto. After washing her hands and cleaning up a few crumbs on her desk, she reached into her satchel and pulled out a book. She opened it and began reviewing her research notes. A new colleague, Angelique, had graciously shown Lee to an extensive library. Lee had spent several hours before training researching one particular bloody time in history.
“Minister of Educaaaation…” Rhiannon whispered as she glided into Lee’s office. Lee frowned and pursed her lips at the same time giving her a look of total disgust. “That’s what this town needs – more scholarly influence,” Rhiannon joked sarcastically.
“Get out,” Lee ordered in annoyed tone.
“You are soooo mean to me.”
“That’s right. Now get out.”
Rhiannon narrowed her eyes and after a few seconds of thought, she smiled. “I have an idea. Why don’t you, Daz and I go out tonight and have some ale. It’ll be like old times.”
Lee rolled her eyes and flipped through her notes pretending to ignore Rhiannon.
“Leeeee! I am all alone! No one here will hang out with me and you are still mad about that thing with the werewolves!”
Lee did not look up.
“Leeeee! I didn’t do it on purpose! It was suppose to be a friendly bet,” she continued in a quiet voice, “and I wasn’t suppose to lose!”
Lee jumped from her seat and cast a fire spell at Rhiannon. Rhiannon screamed as she put out the flames.
“That hurt, Lee!”
“It’s going to hurt a lot worse if you keep talking,” Lee stated calmly but firmly. “There is no defense for what you did. You had a changeling pose as myself and place a bet with the werewolves. Had THAT been the end of the story I could have forgiven you, but you used a student’s life as the wager. And you lost. Had Daz not arrived that poor kid would have been devoured – flesh and soul. Oh, and let’s not forget my reputation. They ran me out of that town, and you didn’t once try to set the record straight. How could you? No, no. Don’t answer. It doesn’t matter.”
“The kid was okay, no harm….”
Lee held up her hand to shush Rhiannon. Lee took a deep breath and looked Rhiannon in the eyes. “I had intended on just letting you pass. I figured you would hang out for a bit, get bored, and move on. But now, I see you haven’t learned anything from the past, and I don’t think Moonglow is safe with you in it.”
Rhiannon raised an eyebrow and leaned closer to Lee, “Oh yea?”
“Yes. I have felt partly responsible for you because we met when you were very young. But, that time has passed. I suggest you leave Moonglow immediately.”
Rhiannon leaned back and pushed a few locks of crimson hair out of her eyes. She tilted her head just a bit and then nodded abruptly. “Fine,” she stated in a submissive tone. “You got it. I’ll leave right now.” She threw her hands in the air and turned to walk out the door. As she exited she looked over her shoulder, “You know, Lee, you should really get a grip on your temper,” she grumbled as she look down at her singed clothes and burned arms.
Lee sat down and rubbed her temples. How she hoped Rhiannon was truly leaving.
Rhiannon left the lycaeum angrily. Her face was red and her eyes were narrowed. “Yea, I will leave Moonglow my Lady Lee, but I’m going to take care of one thing before I go.” Rhiannon returned to her camp in the woods and smiled at her new friend. The changeling turned into Rhiannon and stared back at her. She asked the changeling in a friendly voice, “So, are you enjoying these woods? Being locked up in the zoo must have been difficult to endure.” Rhiannon smiled sweetly.
The changeling stared back blankly and picked up an apple. It studied the apple carefully and took a bite. It looked back to Rhiannon and smiled.
