Not meant as a continuation of the locked post, but I wanted to point out that I was recently asked my opinions on how to hold a good RP class, so its a safe bet that there will likely be some held soon. I took the time to point this out because I am quite sure there are no public RP classes behind held (and I don't know if there are even any private ones that specific guilds hold for their new members. Haven't heard of any.)

So I'll wait for said person to post details if they wish, I just thought I'd make it known.

Every newb in my guild gets an immediate RP class before letting them loose on you folks. And most vets get re-briefs on my additional rules, also.

I think we all make an effort to go over things with new members. The point is this, there is such a thing as saturation when you first join a guild and you can not 'remember' everything. I give out a book and have them read it before I accept them into the guild. I give them a copy of it and have them read the website too.

Many of the people we bring into the community have never rped before or if they have they are not as 'experienced' as the intolerent people that sometimes come down on them pretty hard. You all had to learn and you were given every opportunity to learn. Do the same for the new guys. Rather than make fun of them or chastize their leaders do something unusual...teach them yourself.

I think rp classes should be mandatory since certian things untaught players do or poorly taught players will do is use certian things that are a no-no but weren't taught properly so they think its ok to do.

Here is my opinion on the matter:

For guilds it is the duty of the guild to teach there new members the rules and regulations of not only there guild but the standard accepted rules for the community (no KOSing and etc). It is also the guilds responsibility that when they recruit someone new to the rp scene they teach them the basics of rp to give them a sturdy foundation to build there style as well as the guilds own views on rp things (a virtuosu guild views on the anti-cirtues or whatever). The latter part of that is done just by interaction and learning through rp.

For those unguilded who wish to rp it is a little trickier and maybe a fancy rp class for people is in order.

When it comes down to it the duty of teaching new recruits how to essentially behave falls on the parent guild. You recruit those that seem liek they want to learn and teach them. If they mess up you point out mistakes and educate further and if they just refuse to get it they get a shiny boot. Even with application processes for guild and the like a bad seed can still infiltrate through so there will always be minor incidents. But if a guild is complaining that there members are not getting it or other guilds are complaining about such a guild then its the parents guild to do something or roll over.

For individuals who wish to remain unguilded and just rp (how ever many are left) can learn by being taught the basics by anyone without needing a formalized class. If theres a decent number like 5 or whatever then a formalized class may make it easier. But all it takes is one person teaching someone who wants to learn and then that can open up rp between the characters. You teach through party or whatever then they rp a bit with you or others and it opens a new rp channel.

I am in no way forcing this on anyone just what i believe. Feel free to smack it down.

I think what he is saying is that some of the things new players are doing, are doing cause they were not taught the do's and don'ts of rp in the community. So you have one new member that's been in a guild for about a week...they do something that is a don't..but isn't told other wise..so another new member just comes in..sees what they believed to be one of the more "seasoned" vets doing something so they figure it is alright to do it as well. Therefore you have a never ending cycle of don't because noone showed them the proper do's. *nods knowingly*

How many times has this particular subject been on this board? Let's see I've been around about 5 years , maybe 6 and I've seen it ohhhhh at least 50 times.
Now I know there aren't a whole NEW set of RP folks out there that need this information. It's all the OLD folks who want to rehash this once again.

OK usually I just sit back and read stuff and move on but this time I will say what I wanna say.
Two of my characters are GMs of guilds. NO they aren't huge guilds with 200 people I dont know in them. They are smaller guilds with people I know and respect. Now my people know how to RP and when we get someone in that is new to RP we do our VERY best to get them ready for the "Community Scrutiny". But the very last thing I tell them is HAVE FUN.

If a veteran RPer is out and he forgets and says "LOL" I do not call him out right there on the scene and say something like " I dont know what language he is speaking blah blah blah" I ignore it and in chat I laugh my butt off! Cuz you know what , I ain't perfect. I am sure I have messed up plenty of times in my 6 years and I will continue to mess up.

For the new people , when they mess up . Same thing. I get them in chat and laugh and tell them whats right. Quick fix and people are still having fun not feeling like they ruined someones WHOLE life by messing up.

I think classes are a great idea. I have been to a couple and they were fun! Just remember this is a game , its supposed to be fun and if you take it so serious that you are stressing out, you need to step away from the keyboard.
And remember Veteran or Newb, if you make a mistake , IMA STILL LOVE YA!! Very Happy

Cat...I agree with you completely..no need to be bash people for simple mistakes about speech and the like.
One thing that needs thought about is this..when Tram was invented it was so EA could keep customers..The Fel rules are harsh and many could not deal with them..so they created a "safe spot"...Tram. Ok good for EA and the people that can't deal with Fel..but then they needed to interact...Hence RP war and RP rules in Tram. What many do not see is that once they made the Alliances possible, the concept of "warred means you are part of the community" is no longer valid..You can't boot just one guild for failing to follow RP rules (now we have a whole list in an alliance). That also makes it harder to have an elitist attitude so the result is, more people that need to learn rules and less control by the guilds... and maybe some old rules need to be adjusted

I think the issue is that there is a mutual distrust between roleplayers when it comes to teaching new members how to roleplay. The assumption being that a guild is not running roleplay classes for their new members, the roleplay classes are insufficient or teach flawed roleplay, or there is simply too much lenience when their members break the rules.

I suggest that there be a standardized roleplay class curriculum that all guilds follow. After that is learned you can teach your members the specific roleplay/rules of your guild, so that specialized/unique roleplay that is not universally followed in the community doesn't get mixed in with the main class of "This is how you roleplay".

Then I suggest everyone actually use said curriculum and carry out said roleplay classes. angel12
