Poshe, like many others grieved for the loss of the Princess. He also knew that the one who was hit hardest by the tragedy was none other than the King himself. For the last few days Poshe allowed the king to grieve and without disturbance. But it was time to move on. Sanctus needed its king more than ever.
Poshe headed into the halls of Blackguard, Made his way to the door of the King's chambers and gently knocked three times on the heavy reinforced wooden door. The King did not answer.
"My Lord?" Poshe asked with a sense of doubt that the king would answer.
He was one of very few with access to the Kings chambers. But as Poshe went for his key, Talon opened the door with reluctance. Poshe entered and noted that the King had all but given up. He had not slept, he had not eaten. Talon didn't even speak. he only sate in his chair and awaited what ever Poshe had to say to him. He half expected reports and the like, but deep down, he knew what Poshe was about to discuss.
"My King, I will get to the point. I do grieve for our loss. Nothing can replace the Princess and the Queen. But you are not alone. We are not so different you and I. You swore fealty to an idea called Sanctus as I have done. I serve you without question. But I cannot continue to serve a kingdom when its own king hides in his room shutting out the rest of the world. The people need your guidance, your presence and your devotion."
Talon just sat there staring out of the window. Poshe had wondered if he was even listening. Just then, the king spoke. "Why do we bother Poshe? Why do we fight when the cost of fighting is too much to bear?"
Poshe stood beside his king looking out the same window. "we do it for them sire." He points to the people of the land. "We do it because we have the power to do so. We do it because no one else can. Sire you must return to your throne, to show our enemies that they may come in the night and steal those we love, but they will not diminish our resolve, our courage or stop us from the duty we swore to perform. That is what sets us apart from the rest."
"But I have lost so much." Talon said with the feeling that all hope was lost.
"Have you sire?" Poshe quickly responded. "You think your are the only one who has lost a loved one in this kingdom? Look at Davaran, His love had left him for the darkness. If that isn't dead, I don't know what is. I have lost my mother, my brother and now I am estranged to my own father."
Talon had a questionable look on his face as if surprised to hear that Poshe lost family members.
"I tried to tell you the night I returned, but you wouldn't hear it. So you will hear it now. My brother was lost so long ago in a hunting accident. My mother committed suicide when forced to choose between me and my father. I buried her. My father let me leave but I do not think I will ever grace his presence again. I am not saying you shouldn't grieve sire. Instead, channel your grievance by striking the heart of those who have wounded you. Sit upon your throne once more and show the world that Sanctus is strong.
Ride with me Sire, together we will charge ahead and when the smoke has cleared, we shall know peace."
(Poshe used the "Ride with me" as a metaphor) |
