The Nahul

The Nahul by Countess Emir Darloch
-A leatherbound book with a large, golden, crecent moon embossed on the cover-
The curse of the werewolf is both tragic and alluring. Some consider it a horrible fate - to lose control of yourself and let the beastly, basal emotions surge forth while others seek the opportunity to run feral and unbound by their human inhibitions.
Few mortals have witnessed the transformation of a werewolf from human to beast and back. This is to be expected. Most who could physically shift guarded their secret carefully. Occasionally, however, someone saw the change and lived to tell about it. Thus the legends began. We are not, however, the mindless savage beasts history makes us out to be. We are werewolves, we are the Nahul.
Since the day I first discovered I was born a Nahul, I have been consumed by the desire to find information concerning the histories and origins of our species. Written records are precious few, most being accounts penned by humans regarding such things as baby snatchings and late-night sightings of 'wolf men'.
Through endless research however, I have gleaned some information that might be considered useful. I include all that I have found within this tome. Guard it carefully, for it may very well save your life one day, or for that matter, lead to your demise.
Werewolves are immune from aging and from most physical diseases due to the constant regeneration of their physical tissue. They can, therefore, be practically immortal. However, they can be killed by any wound that destroys the heart or the brain, or any form of death that causes brain or heart damage (such as hanging or other oxygen deprivation methods.)
Werewolves have what could be considered an "allergy" to silver. Any contact with silver to a werewolves skin creates a painful burning rash. If a werewolf is cut or wounded by a silver weapon, death is certain.
All Nahul can assume three forms: humanoid, wolf and hybrid. The transformations can occur at will, not in reaction to the full moon as often described in legends and folklore.
In animal form, Nahul tend to be larger than normal wolves and infact the differences between the two are so minute that most people would not be able to tell them apart without close inspection.
The hybrid form is bipedal, standing roughly eight to nine feet in height, with thick fur, sharp claws and the head of a wolf.
Speech is possible in
both forms, although it is gutteral and difficult to understand.
In all three stages of the change, werewolves retain their intelligence and control over their actions. However, strong emotions such as fear or anger, severe physical injuries and sometimes even the the heat of battle, can cause a loss of control. That is when the Beast takes over; pure animal instinct fueled by raw emotions. When the Beast is in control enemies and allies alike both become prey, for it makes no distinction between the two.
In most cases, the Rage lasts only a short time, usually until the threat that brought about the loss of control passes. There have been a few exceptions though....incidents where the Beast took days to bring under control, and even a handfull where the Nahul lost itself completely to the Beast.
