The Necronomicon

Book of the Dead

This ancient tome has existed for countless millennia, corrupting millions of souls, dragging them down into the pit of Oblivion. The power of the Necronomicon is so great that it is rumored to slumber on all of the planes of existence, even those far removed from the Shards of Sosaria.

The appearance of the awful grimiore is different for each person or thing viewing it. A human gazing upon it would see a tattered book bound in human skin, where as an orc looking at it would see orcish hide covering it, not the flesh of a human. To stare at the black runes sprawled over it is to invite insanity. Only the most demented of souls could comprehend the markings and still have a chance to retain his coherent thoughts.

Dark knowledge can be found within the accursed artifact. There are detailed descriptions of all known undead and some unknown species as well. Necromantic rites squirm in-between the pages, promising power and insanity. It is even rumored that the arcane formulae for Lichdom can be found, but for a price that most cannot afford to pay.

Liches are the most feared of the Undead. Once great Necromancers, they pursued even darker arts to become immortal. They have had centuries to perfect their magical workings and even the mightiest mage or warrior must be wary of these ancient sorcerers.

There are also those known as Lichlords, who surpass the power of a Lich a hundred fold. Entire adventuring parties, working together have lost their lives to these beings. Most can be found deep within the dungeon Deceit, along side hoards of lesser undead.

Ghouls, specters, and shades... they all appear similar to the unwary mortal although each differ in strength and cunning. Specters are the most powerful and have even been known to lead skeletons and zombies in small packs to ravage the living. Shades and ghouls are weaker and tend to be less intelligent than the Specters. They rarely travel together, and are often found alone in the woods or in a favorite graveyard.

The skeletal hordes are very diverse indeed. They range from the lowly skeleton all the way up to the Skeletal Knight and Bone Mage. The Skeletal Knights and the slightly weaker Bone Knights are extremely agile and possess much strength. Bone Magi are very proficient in magic and rival some of the lesser liches in their arcane workings. The Bone Magi and Skeletal Knights are often commanders in the armies of the Lichlords and can also be found in the Dungeon Deceit.

Zombies are the weakest of the Undead. They are the cannon fodder used by Necromancers and Liches alike. Zombies are extremely slow but are not to be taken lightly. They are very strong as well and can seriously damage or kill the inexperienced or foolhardy. They are often found in the several cemeteries dotting the land.
