Chapter II
Honesty
Eben worked hard at his duties. After his morning prayer he would often toil through to the night. After a while when Herold grew more comfortable with Eben, he was allowed to work unshackled.
Over the next year Eben learned the skills of farming, and proved to be quite adept. Eben was allowed one day off a week, he was even allowed to travel into town so long as he had an escort.
Eben took this time to travel to the various merchants that he had stole from. He confessed to what he had done and promised to repay them for the merchandise he had stolen over the years. Eben begged for their forgiveness. Much to his surprise most of the merchants forgave him and were willing to let Eben make amends.
On his day off he would travel from merchant to merchant giving them what little gold he had though his work on the farm. Eben was able to make money by doing other servants duties in addition to his own, for this service they would pay him a few coins.
Eben did this not to profit himself but to help pay retribution to the merchants. Some merchants would refuse his gold, saying that the offer of retribution was enough, but Eben would use his former skills as a thief and place the gold into their pouches anyway.
After a while some of the merchants began to take a liking to Eben, the would talk to him for a while and give him a snack for the ride back to Herold's farm. Some people would mock Eben's efforts to clear his name saying that he was just acting and would revert back to his old ways, but Eben ignored their taunts.
The voice had told him to do these deeds, Eben knew the voice was coming from within him, and he trusted it.
Eben had learned the virtue of Honesty.
From that point on Eben lived a honest life above all else.
