It was early morning, as the city of Moonglow was just waking up for the new day. Within the city walls, shops were opening up and the taverns were opening their doors. As the citizens woke from their beds, a young mage on the streets stumbled into one of the tavern doors with a wide-eyed expression upon his face.
Before long, one of the waitresses recognized the startled mage and rushed over to him.
"Leo! What is wrong?"
Leo stuttered out a few words, but could not say anything to make any sense. Hearing this, the waitress helped Leo to a table and pulled a decorated quilt from the walls. Unfolding it, she quickly placed it on his shoulders and shouted for another waitress to bring some warm cider. With her hands on his shoulders, she looked over to Leo's face and noticed his pale, blank expression. Stuttering bit by bit, Leo began to make sense as he spoke to his waitress friend...
"....so....cold..."
"Do you need me to get another quilt Leo?"
"No Mary...no.....it....was so cold..."
Mary raised a brow as she listened to her friend speak, and then was handed to jug of warm cider. Handing it to Leo, he brought up his quivering hand and drank in what he could. Its warmth was to die for, so he thought, as he swallowed the warm liquid down to bring his body still. Bringing abit of his complection back, Leo looked up to Mary and began to speak again, but with a much steadier tone.
"I....I was in the city of Umbra last night Mary. I was looking for a few books on the history of necromantic regaents so that I might study them in my own home for today."
Mary nodded her head and slowly moved to sit next to him with her arm around him. "Go on", she said.
"....as I was packing my things to leave, I walked out into the streets to prepare for my trip home when..."
Leo gulped before he continued.
"...when there walked a man, with his face covered from his hood and a black flowing cloak at his back. I could hear his armor, as if some type of bone armor forged with steel..."
Mary slightly moved away from Leo from his words, feeling uneasy from what he was saying.
"...and strung over his arm was a blade, some type of red blade. As I looked upon it, the stranger stopped as if sensing my gaze, and turned his head towards me. The last thing I remember was darkness enveloping around me as he glowed a cold blue gaze out in my direction. Before I knew it, it was early dawn as I awoke on the ground at the gates of Moonglow."
Mary looked at Leo's face with much concern upon her's. As she moved up to him, she lifted her hand to feel Leo's face. It was cold. Leo looked to her and then reached into his pocket to pull out a parchment and a wand. Having one in each hand, he closed his eye and tapped the parchment with his wand. A few magic sparkles lit up, and as she took the parchment to unroll it, she saw the image of what little Leo sustained memory could create.
"a wandering stranger", she whispered to herself. |
