Mallory groaned as she rolled over in her bed the next morning. She did not ever remember being this sore. Those dragons were rougher than she had thought. Luckily Mave had agreed to go with her, otherwise there were a few time she thought she might very well be made their evening snack. During their hunt Mallory told Mave about the evenings events and she could feel herself once again on the verge of losing her temper. She took out her frustrations on the dragons and drakes and wyerns. After a few hours Mallory noticed her sword was becoming as heavy as her eyes and she and Mave departed their ways. She made her way home and when she arrived home she realized how tired she truly was. Her hand ached where she had wounded it earlier but it would heal. She carried herself up to her room and leaned her head back against the door as it closed. She quickly disrobed and cleaned herself up and readied herself for bed. It was not long before sleep enveloped her and her aches.
The next morning when she woke up, her sore and stiff muscles screamed at her for being worked so hard. They were used to pounding of bread and making cookies, not swinging a sword and being pounded by dragons. She groaned as she sat up in her bed and began lightly stretching her arms. She would make a trip to the healers this afternoon and pick up some balm for her hand and some herbal remedy for her aches. Perhaps she would also swing by the Freehold and check on her friends there. One thing was for sure, she could not swing her sword at any dragons today. She laughed as she readied herself for her trip and thinking twice she placed her armor in her saddle bag and sheathed her sword.
She had arrived at the Freehold with the thoughts of visiting with her friends, not knowing that Smiticles was going to be there. When she arrived she noticed his horse in the stables and it brought a smile to her face and her stomach got tied in knots. She hoped he had not heard the evil gossip that had been said about her last night. She thought about just turning around and going home, but her heart wouldn’t let her. She needed to see him, to feel the comfort of his hands, and be with him. She stepped on the teleporter and was instantly on the roof. She looked around and there at a large table was Smiticles, surrounded by his family and friends. She stood there for a few moments wondering if she should go over there, but she didn’t have to wonder long, because he made his way over to her. Her heart leapt for joy when he took her hands in his and leaned over to whisper that he was glad to see her. She looked up at him and told him that she had missed him too and was very happy to see him. He thanked her for the letter and the herbs and admitted they made him feel better, but he had a concerned look on his face as he asked her about the small spot of blood that had found its way to the outside of the package. Mallory blushed and explained to him about her small mishap with the weapons and he was quickly relieved and pulled her close to him.
Smiticles asked if there was somewhere they could go to talk and Mallory nodded and led him down to the small pond area. Smiticles asked Mallory to sit and still holding his hand she did so. She looked up at him slightly confused when he did not sit next to her; instead he dropped to one knee and looked her directly in the eyes. He told Mallory that he had something to tell her and instantly Mallory’s heart seemed to cease beating. Certainly he had heard the rumors. She dropped her head down and ever so gently Smiticles raised her chin so he was once again looking into her eyes. He took both of her hands and began telling Mallory of his love for her and that he had indeed heard the rumors. He assured her that he did not believe any of them and that nothing would change how he loved her. Mallory’s eyes filled with tears and she impulsively threw her arms around Smiticle’s neck and held him close. How she loved being in his arms. She felt so safe and so loved. She told him that she loved him as well and not a day had gone by that he was not on her mind and in her heart. She leaned back to look him in the eyes and ever so tenderly he kissed her for the first time. The kiss was gentle, but Mallory could feel the love and the passion behind it, and she returned it fully. They sat talking a while longer, their arms still around each other as if afraid to let go and find out this was only a dream.
There was a commotion on the roof above them and someone came through the room mumbling something about an attack. Mallory and Smiticles made their way up to the roof to find everyone gone, minus a few patrons that had just arrived. Mallory turned to Chad and asked him where they had all gone and he playfully called her “little one”. Mallory noticed the look of anger on Smiticles face and she leaned up on her toes and kissed him gently. She said that while she may be little she could still swing hard with a sword. Smiticles grinned slightly at that and they made their way to Zento to assist the best they could.
The rest of the evening they spent holding hands, talking, exchanging gentle kisses and just being together. There had been a time in her life that Mallory would have been embarrassed by this mush attention in public, but Mallory loved this man with all of her heart and she didn’t care who knew it. She felt protected and loved when he was with her and with his arm around her she felt as though she was in heaven. She was happy to be with him and didn’t want to let him go, but alas the night soon drew to a close and they said their goodbyes. He leaned over from his horse and she leaned up to kiss him and Mallory wished him a safe journey. As he rode away she smiled thinking of how much she loved him.
When she returned home for the evening she made her way to the study and she pulled out a piece of parchment and wrote…
My Darling,
As I write this letter, there is no doubt in my mind that you are many miles away, sleeping and perhaps dreaming. I hope that your dreams are pleasant this night. As for myself, I find that while my eyes are heavy, the thought of sleep does not seem to be close on the horizon. I find myself lying awake thinking of you and longing for more of your sweet, gentle kisses. You see my love, you have awakened a part of me that had not before been alive, and now it does not know how to quiet itself unless you are near.
Darling, please know that not a day goes by that you are not loved. When we are together everything seems so much better. All my fears disappear, all my troubles drift away, and I'm filled with love for you. I'd never thought that such love existed until you became a part of my life. Now my days are filled with thoughts of you and my nights are filled with dreams of the future.
I will love you always,
Mallory
She allowed the ink to dry and sealed it with a bit of wax, placing a small flower in the wax as she pressed it with a smooth stone. She placed the letter on her desk with the decision she would deliver this letter herself using the rune she had been given. She made her way to her bed and as she drifted off she couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to fall asleep in the arms of the man she loved. She sighed softly with a small shiver and slowly drifted off to dreams. _________________ Good friends are like stars. You don't always see them but you always know they are there...
