Reaching the freehold Vaen had to help Brianha down off her horse as she was still weakened from the events of the evening. All made their way up to the big table and wearily sat down waiting anxiously to hear what had been seen in the crystal ball.
Claudette could not wait any longer and pressed her lightly for details, but Brianha shook her head and asked for a moment to collect her thoughts. Really though for her it was an opportunity to think of what to say.. Knowing that what she said could change many things. Looking up she asked if someone could bring her some wine… it would settle her nerves a bit she decided.
Taking a deep breath and raising her head not looking anyone in the eye she started to speak…
“I have seen many things tonight… some sad…some happy…” she hesitates still thinking of how best to go forward. “But to answer the question you all want answered… it was an accident, I slipped and fell.” She slumped in her chair as she looked at the confusion on Claudettes face. It was so hard to lie this way to her but she knew she must do this to protect others. She could not look in anyone else’s eyes after seeing the confusion in her cousins… it was just too hard to see.
Sensing that she needed to get away from the questions being thrown at her Vaen took charge and gently guided her out of the freehold. He too knew the toll the crystal ball took on a soul and was sensitive enough to let her have her own thoughts with no prying questions. They spent a while at the gardens in Nujelm where Vaen eased her mind with song. Eventually she was in need of rest though and he escorted her home.
After watching him leave she sighed and made her way up to her bedroom. She slipped into a nightgown and climbed under her covers. Closing her eyes she watched as her past flew before again and fitfully slept for the remainder of the night. |
