The messenger arrived at the summer residence of the Otori Yotogi clan.

Tai had been repeating the 12 sun salutes until he was glowing with sweat but his mind had found an inner serenity.

He had his guards escort the messenger to the Dining Hall, where a breakfast had been laid out enough to feed an army.

"Eat with my men, and I will see they provide you with clean clothes and fresh horse and gold for your return. You are among friends here."

With that Tai clapped his hands and the massive Dining Hall filled with hungry men joslting each other good naturededly and treating the messenger with quiet respect.

Tai took the letter and a fresh pot of willow bark tea and moved to his study.

He poured himself a cup of tea and crumbled a leaf of mint into it before he started sipping it as he read the letter.

Then he took out his inkstone and brushes and composed a letter back.

Duchess Molly,

As I told you long ago, what is in the past has been forgiven and forgotten. If there is any way that my humble self can aid you, I will make it so.

My response to your letter is to have your messenger bring a gift of peace.

With that Tai sprinked salt on the parchment and then rolled it up and sealed it with the Otori seal.

He carried it back to the Dining Hall. There he saw the messenger was sleeping wearing a new kamishimo. Kondo the guard captain was just covering him with a blanket.

"Kondo-san, bring him to me when he awakes. In the meantime prepare four horses. Yourself and a volunteer will ride with myself and this messenger to see him back to his lands safely."

Kondo bowed and covered his right fist with the open palm of his left fist.
