Mallory closed her bedroom door and sighed heavily as she leaned back on it. What a night it had been. She made her way over to the stool in front of her bed and leaned over to remove her shoes. She stretched and wiggled her toes, allowing them to enjoy the freedom from the shoes. How she longed to return to childhood and the days of running barefoot in the grass. She set the shoes down at the end of her bed, and stood up to make her way to her small writing desk. She looked down at her journal that she had not used for some time. She opened it to a clean page and began writing…

June 24th, 353

It has been a long while since I have written words here amongst these pages. Tonight has been one that has left my mind and heart mystified.

I received a letter earlier today from Smiticles. How delighted I was to hear from him. His letter arriving was much I suppose like a fresh spring appearing in the middle of a desert. How I want very much to not only read his words, but to hear his strong voice upon my ears and to feel the comfort of his hand. Only a few days have passed since we have last been together, but each day I find myself waking with the hope of seeing him yet again. I have indeed become smitten with this gentleman. I truly wonder if he knows how he has stolen away my heart. I am afraid to make my affections known, for if he did not return them… Perhaps it is foolish for me to trust my heart, when it has gotten me hurt.

I made my way this evening to The Freehold, with the hopes that Smiticles would indeed be there. I also had some business with Hugh, about this school that we are going to get started here in the near future. I need to find a few more teachers and then we should be about ready to begin, just in time for fall. I arrived at The Freehold and found Flair sitting there with Heather and Hugh. He did not greet me as cheerfully as normal, and I worried that he had taken ill. I was advised by Hugh that his heart had been broken. My heart goes out to this man, for I know the pain of love lost. I pray that the Virtues will both guide and protect him and comfort him in his time of pain the way they did for me. I know that his friends will also provide him a source of comfort, as did mine.

I sat down to speak with Hugh, and looked around the roof and did not see Smiticles. I had so hoped he would be there, but he was not. After getting a cup of tea for myself, Hugh, a young gentleman Andrew Francis, and I sat and talked about the school, but it was not long that our conversation found its way back to the subject of matters of the heart. Again I looked around and did not see Smiticles. It was then that Hugh told me his story, of himself and his love. What a story! I did not believe it at first, but who am I to doubt. His story brought tears to my eyes. To have a love like his and Heather’s…

There were soon other customers, and Hugh saw to making them comfortable and taking their drink orders and it brought back memories of me working there. Again I looked about and did not see Smiticles. I wondered if I had misread and perhaps he had written Maggy’s place, The Hunter’s Lodge. As I was about to excuse myself for the evening, an old friend entered The Freehold. Dan! I was so happy to see him. We sat for quite sometime catching up on each others lives. He has found himself a girl, Syn… Syn something. She is a very lovely girl, who is very quiet. They have a home together, and I should really bring them a gift. What would it be like to share a house with the one you love? To always wake up with them there and them to be there when you ended your day… I wish them all the happiness of the world together.

Vaen came in looking for Drayden, and I had to explain to Dan that we were no longer lovers, but friends none the less. I did not get the chance to tell him about Smiticles, and I am not sure I would have, since I do not know if the feelings are that of mutual admiration and affection or of true love. I am so confused by what my heart says and what my mind says.

Mallory looked at all the writing she had done and laughed softly… Suddenly something that Dan had said to her came flooding back and she knew what she must do. She looked down and finished her entry...

I must once again close these pages as my eyes are growing heavy. I pray to the Virtues that I gain clarity and wisdom.

Mallory closed the book and sighed softly. She pulled out a piece of parchment and began writing…

My beloved Smiticles,

How does this day find you my love? I am well, although I miss you. How my heart longs for us to be together. Every morning when I arise, you are the first thing I think about and the last when I lie down to sleep. I know it has only been a few short days since we have been apart, but as you said to me it feels so much longer. It hardly makes sense to me, but one thing I have learned is my inability to instruct my heart with my head. A good friend of mine told me this very evening that you must follow your heart, and how true those words are. If I were to follow my heart, it would lead straight to you, for that is where it longs to be.

I am sorry that our paths have not crossed this evening, but I could not be more delighted that they have led us to each other. I look forward to learning more about you and falling more in love with you.

Until we are again together,

Love
Mallory

Mallory looked at the letter and knew she couldn’t be more true to her heart. She said a quick prayer and blew the ink dry and sealed it. After writing Smiticles’ name on the front she kissed the letter, in her mind wondering what it would be like to kiss Smiticles for the first time. She smiled and put the letter on her desk to take to town to have sent first thing in the morning.

Exhausted, from the hard work and strenous labor he had been engaged in, Smiticles almost missed the envelope sitting on his front stoop. As he bent down he immediately noticed the addressee and a smile rushed to his face. Upon reading the note he couldn't contain his enthusiasm over her admission of her love for him. Rushing into the house, he immediately penned a reply.

My darling Mallory:

I miss you immensely and my heart does truly ache to be with you once again. I have been very busy and I will not bore you with excuses as to why I have not been accessible. I will simply say that I have missed you dearly. Your touch soothes my soul and your gentle, angelic voice brings peace to my heart.

I must admit I was taken aback by your profession of love for me. Do not take that in the wrong way for I was simply surprised, not angered. I can not tell you how much I have felt the same and have fretted over your true feelings for me. I have been torn over this and you have now lifted my soul to the heavens.

Mallory, I must say I love you. My heart and my soul long for your presence. Never in my life has one person made such a dramatic impact upon my life. I have already followed my heart and I have found you, standing firm in my path to happiness.

We will be together soon. Until that time, think of me for I shall be surely thinking of you.

With all my love,

Smiticles

Smiticles placed a single rose of Trinsic within and sealed the envelope gently. In what was becoming a regular occurance, he handed the note to one of his trusted gypsy friends. By this time they did not need directions to the letter's destination.

Mallory deeply inhaled the wonderful fragrence of the rose as she read the words from her beloved. She needed no excuses for his absense, for they were to be together again soon. She had worried that her words of love would fall silently, but to know that they were indeed returned made her heart soar.

She smiled as she held the letter to her heart, wishing she could be holding the sender instead. There was much to be done before the quest, she must go and see about having her armor repaired, as well as her sword. Too long had she strayed from the battle field. She had seen brothers and friends return from battles, blood upon their swords, and upon their bodies. She was well skilled with a sword, her father had seen to that. No one should be unable to defend themselves. Her armor was that of an older brother and her sword one of her father's, which worked, but was a tad large for a woman such as Mallory.

She placed the rose in a simple vase next to her bed and gathered her bag and made her way to town to see about her armor and sword.
