Kay stretched languorously in Telia's soft bed. It was very comfortable, and he had not thought a bed could feel so good beneath him. He lay there for several minutes, breathing in the cozy air, enjoying relaxation.
He thought to make a note in his journal, lest he forget this feeling of contentment. He stretched his arm over the edge of the bed to reach into his backpack. Feeling for his journal, his fingers closed around its familiar shape. He slid it from his backpack and laid back in the soft, downy pillows to read it. He opened to the first page and began to read the notes he made.
He flipped through the journal, skimming his journal entries and various notes, until he came to one final note, written in red ink. As he read the note, his brows furrowed in thought.

Death comes to those that betray their own
Who had he betrayed? He didn't have a clue. Obviously, this was some drow he had angered.. But who?? And on closer examination, he could smell that the ink was not ink. This inscription was written in blood.
He lay there, mind whirling through a myriad of memories, trying to focus on ones that could possibly lead to this person. There was one young woman in particular that came to the front of his mind..
Kilena had been a lovely creature. She had seemed so innocent compared to her guildmates under Morchiant's leadership. He had marvelled to find another drow, so seemingly like himself, different from other drow. She was the only woman of later times to take his offer of love serious, while many others had scorned or ridiculed or rejected him. They had been betrothed to marry....
But that was 10 years ago. She had likely forgotten him and found a more promising young man by now. Kay had been terrified and had disappeared from everyone's sight in those times. Better to hide from any retribution of the Drow for escaping then to have another he cared for deeply hurt or killed, again. But it had taken 10 years to feel as if danger had passed. To a drow, he reasoned, that is but a blink of an eye. Upon returning to the realm, he had discovered that society thought otherwise.
After 10 years, his beloved Kilena had also disappeared.
He wondered who the author of this note was. He lay there, going over more memories until his weary eyes slowly shut of their own volition. |
