Caina was unusually beautiful this afternoon. No snow, no clouds, no wind. Just a quiet pristine day. It even seemed like nature was taking the afternoon off. No polar bears, no snow wolves, just a particularly warm sun shining down, and peace. Sweet serenity.
While the city of Caina was as dead as the people that used to run it, all was not lost. From the bricks of the old a tower was built, and in it was housed the Wraith Lord, Bailos, and all his machinations. And in this tower, on a level quite above ground floor, were two men...more specifically entities; men wasnt quite the right word. Bailos, and Sethos. Once an ideal master/apprentice setup, Sethos progressed well in his training and Bailos was now just "a reference guide" as far as Sethos was concerned.
Inside this room, inside the tower, inside the city of Caina....was a chessboard, around which sat the two. The pieces all lined up, in glorious condition. Their finely and meticulously crafted figurine designs were made from Ebon and White Sandstone, the board itself was even a work of art, inlaid with polished squares of the very same stonework.
The pair looked silently at each other for a minute or two, before Bailos finally motioned for him to begin their contest..."White moves first"
"Doesn't always need to be that way", declared Sethos as he shifted his pawn forward two squares. Neither of them spoke much for a few minutes. They had a quiet understanding of each other somehow. It was if they had conversations with each other, without really saying anything. Not that they thought alike...just...an understanding.
Tapping his finger on a Rook, Bailos surveyed the board as he deliberated. Moving it forward a few spaces, he set it down heavy-handedly before finally deciding to ask about The Order's recent military moves...So how do the invasions progress? I left Illadar with no help on Cove, but last I heard that worked out fine. *Sethos nods* What of the other cities he mentions?
Sethos, belaying his move until Bailos ended his sentance, picked up his Bishop and guided it over the board diagonally, and held it up as he spoke. Could be better, but seems to be moving fine. *Sethos sets the Bishop down and knocks Bailos' Rook over, replacing it's square with his piece* They made a lot of moves, fast.
So I've heard Bailos replied with disdain...not over the news, but over the loss of his Rook. There is much I wish I could have done, or done better *He moves his Queen* but I've still got ideas left...*Sethos positions his Bishop to take the Queen* Do you think you learned a lot from me? Bailos had to ask.
I think the fact that I'm still here sends the message that I think there is more to learn.
*Soft, almost as if a whisper*...Good...I've got more to teach you
*Bailos slides the Queen diagonally and motions down at the board*
.....Checkmate...
And with a youthful frustration, Sethos begrudginly begins to reset his pieces. |
