With his solo fact finding mission to Cove safely behind him, Max's mind was made up that the skullies could not stay in Cove...it was much too close to Vesper.

The trip to Cove last eve showed Max exactly what he expected to see for a town run by the Order. The townspeople were not very talkative about the situation either. Even without information from the obviously scared and unhappy residents, Max's own eyes saw everything he needed to see to make up his mind.

All about the town were poor residents being abused and enslaved by the dark robed figures of the Order, and some orcs as well. Townsfolk pressed into service against their will, and the port seemed to be blockaded by dark ships at sea. It did not seem to Max that the occupiers were allowing folks to leave the town, but he could not confirm that.

At one point Max was approached by two who seemed to be either in the Order itself, or at least working for the Order. This was not entirely unexpected being a stranger in the town, but the story Max gave them about his horse coming up lame out on the road seemed to satisfy them, although not entirely. They were suspicious of his intentions, and asked many questions, but allowed him to leave without trouble.

With all this swirling in his head Max knew he had to take action in trying to move the Order out of Cove. Deciding to try the diplomatic approach first, he resolves to send his demands to Charnel Hill.

Leaders of the Order of the Ebon Skull,

I write to you to demand the Order's immediate withdrawal from the Town of Cove. With my own eyes I have seen the atrocities taking place there, and the villagers enslaved. Orcs are coming and going as they please, and the residents have been reduced to less than livable conditions by your heavy handedness.

I give you two days time to vacate the Town before myself and the Adventurer's League of Vesper begin taking action against your forces in the Town. We do not seek armed conflict with you, but at the same time, we will not tolerate these crimes to occur so close to our home city of Vesper.

Collect your forces, free the citizens of Cove, and go back to Umbra and Charnel Hill.

Regards,

Max vanPelt
Guildmaster, Adventurer's League of Vesper

Re-reading the note Max nods, satified he made his point quite clear. Chosing a good pigeon who will not falter on the approach to Charnel Hill, he sends his demands to the Dark Ones.

Still hanging around Umbra while his replacement in the muddled beurocracy was trained, Bailos received this odd piece of mail

Max and his Pelt,

Thank you for you interest in the city of Cove. Unfortunately your ignorance leaves you at a disadvantage. I do not use the word ignorance to insult you, take it for its litteral meaning which is that you are playing the role of "the uninformed". Cove is no longer a residential area. All the citizens were released many days ago. At the behest of many like yourself, and not wishing for conflict, Cove was emptied of its citizenry.

It now serves as a correctional facility and hard labor camp for those who are deviants of the law in Umbra, and any of the other Order's territories.

I am sorry this information was not shared with you. No doubt a machination of those that would seek to further their own hidden agendas. Our intentions abroad have been nothing short of public knowledge. It is merely popular practice to disregard the truth and assume everything that the Order does is an attempt to the bring the end of the world to this plane.

I hope I have lifted the veil of ignorance from you. Being a man of honorable repute, I am sure you can see the value to reabilitating our criminals and deviants. Let us build our society, culture and economy in peace please.

Respectfully Yours,
The Lord Bailos,
The Ebon Council,
and the Government of Umbra

Max could not help but laugh while reading the reply from Lord Bailos. The insulting manner in which he addressed the letter just begged for it to not be taken seriously. If this was the way the Order was going to address Max's attempt to diplomatically avoid conflict, then the outcome was decided.

Lord Bailos:

I am not amused by your thinly veiled attempt at insulting my family name, and I fear you are the one who is ignorant with regard to this situation.

First, I visited Cove myself last eve, and saw with my own eyes the enslavement of the residents.

Second, even if I were to believe your pathetic explanation claiming the townsfolk were "released" I would still fight for their town on their behalf hoping to allow them to return to their homes without having to live under the thumb of your dark Order.

Finally, I will take your reponse to my demands as an acknowledgement of my guild's determination to drive the Order from Cove. Your responses were clearly not an attempt to avoid what has now become inevitable...ejection from Cove by force.

Once again, I am truly sorry for the innocents who will suffer due to this conflict, but I know they will benefit from it once they have had their Town returned to them.

Regards,

Max vanPelt

Giving the trustworthy pigeon a good meal, Max sends it once again on the journey to Charnel Hill.

Max,

It is unfortunate that you cannot learn when to deal with your own business instead of trying to fluster your neighbors.

Your haphazard tongue has brought me to the simple answer. By the time you receive this letter I will already be in Cove personally. I regret to inform you that the inmates must now die. An eternity of servitude will do them well I should think. I will make sure to know they have you to thanks...

Oh, and clearly...they won't be needing your 'special brand of liberation'.

Tata,
Bailos

*shoving the letter off to head for Max, Bailos went back to work explaining the ledgers to his trainee. Eventually he'd find something to shut everyone up.*
