Max had taken some time away. After the breakup of the Northern Alliance he decided some time helping out his parents at their shop would allow him the opportunity to finish planning out the direction the ALV would take now that they were out of the Alliance. He learned quickly though, that there was no escaping the steady stream of rumors and information freely flowing around Sosaria.

Among the news of recent moves by the skulls Max caught wind of something he had to check out for himself. A short ride to the Vesper bank proved this was no rumor...Vaen Swiftar was selling himself as a hired sword. At first Max really did not think much of it, but after a few more days of thinking on it, his attitude began to change.

This eve was the first time Max had come face to face with Vaen since the dissolving of the Legion and the Alliance. He had hoped it would be easy to say nothing of his thoughts, but eventually the conversation came up.

Max had trouble understanding how Vaen, who followed the path of Justice so rigidly in the past, could now put gold as his chief priority. Surely he must realize that the highest bidder for his services might require acts that would go directly against that virtue he tried so hard to maintain. As far as Max was concerned Vaen might as well have ceased to exist. The mercenary sitting across the table was not the man he had fought and trained with, the man he had become friends with, the man who put his quest for Justice above all else. Max could not keep from thinking that greed was Vaen's motivator now.

Although civil, the conversation was tense. As hard as Max tried to stop himself from saying more, he reached a point where he had already said too much. Vaen knew Max's feelings, and also knew Max did not agree with his current path. There was a strain on this once close friendship. As much as Max wanted to believe this was the same Vaen, he could not stop from thinking Vaen had become a man of few morals.

Max left the tavern wondering what would happen if someone offered Vaen gold to fight against the ALV.

The ALV was truly on its own now.
