Angelique had given Isk three sons and a daughter. Many times they had exchanged gifts of incredible value, sometimes in gold but always in sentiment. Confined to her bed after her stabbing at the Regency meeting,
she spent many hours stroking the moonspun silver hair of her newborn, though he hardly looked newborn, trying to think of a gift of great magnitude to give Isk. Surely they must be getting close to their tenth wedding anniversar. She had always been poor with dates and time.
It had to be something large, something of great interest to him, something that would overshadow every gift she had ever given him. For days her mind wandered over objects in the realm til finally it came to her. Oh it would fulfill his deepest dreams, dreams so deep he was unaware of them, or would be until she gave them to him.
When she was healed, she gathered up crystals, moonstones, and a large quilted pentagram passed down through several generations of the Morei's. Entering the most private areas of the Athenaeum, she carefully placed the crystals and moonstones around the pentagram. Sitting in the center she cleared her mind of all thoughts of Isk, of her children, of tasks she should be tending to.
This particular spirit was difficult to summon, reluctant to return from the other plane. Once before her, he spoke of the past and the future of the realm. Philosophy was Isk's thing, not hers. She summoned this spirit for one reason and one reason only. The deeds. She must get him to say where the deeds are. She complimented him on the massive collection of books in the twin libraries, tossing in a few comments of Isk's twins to entice him into asking of his old friend.
Now she was sure she had him. After some small talk of Isk and the family, using her cunning she spoke of how Isk wished to make sure all the documents left were in order so the books would remain safe from the wrong hands for all of time. The spirit of Richard Ebonrune was more than accomidating. Telling her the location of the key for his box of important papers, showing her how to open the secret door, and telling her the location of his personal seal.
Having all the information she needed and more, she thanked him and assured him that Isk would be sure everything was attended to, before she sent him back to the other plane where spirits belong.
Gathering up her belongings, she quickly sets off to work. Going through the secret doorway she finds the key and his box. Digging through it she finds the deeds to the twin libraries halfway down. Yes the Britain Athenaeum was soon to be hers. Finding another document with his signature she forged his signature onto the deed, adding his personal seal.
She headed into town to register the change in ownership. It did not take much too much trouble to convince the man to overlook the lack of a date of transfer. When their tenth anniversary rolled around she would have Isk's gift ready. She rode home with a contented smile on her face. |
