The night was late as Mallory retired to her quarters in the Garden. She liad in bed and tossed and turned as she tried to drown out the memories of the night. Her mind wandered as she thought about the events that had occurred. It all seemed very much like a horrible dream and she wished she could simply wake up and make it all go away.
She had returned from her errands and her heart leapt when she saw Vaen, and as quickly dropped when she saw the drow Ceinwyn sitting there with him…and in the obvious colors of the Legion. Was it because of her that Vaen had made his decision? She noticed that he was still wearing the timepiece she had gotten for him, but why would he be with someone so terrible. She served them with the hope that Vaen would say or do something, but he did not. It tore at her heart to have him so close, yet so far away, and she excused herself downstairs to finish the wheat grinding for the bread so he would not see the torment her heart was in.
As she was downstairs grinding the wheat, she heard a large group enter the tavern and make their way upstairs. She wiped off her hands and lifted the sack of flour onto her hip and made her way upstairs to serve the new guests. She was not expecting to see the large group of skulls that were surrounding Vaen and Ceinwyn’s table when she entered. She dropped the flour where she stood and hurried over next to Rryn to find out what was happening. More than likely the drow had started something and now Vaen was protecting her. She was very surprised to find out that it was Vaen that they were wanting. Someone kept calling him the avatar, something she did not fully understand. She tried to remember what had happened next, but her anger took over completely and when she came to with a large knot on her head Vaen was gone, as well as the rest of the group. She looked up to Rryn who was tending to her and tried to sit up, but got very woozy. She slumped back to the floor and began sobbing uncontrollably. Rryn helped her to a chair and Miss Angelique got her a cup of hot tea. She sobbed and between breaths told Rryn what had happened between her and Vaen and how she still oved him although his feelings were different. She noticed Isk next to her watching and she did her best to try to regain her composure. She apologized for her outburst and behind his mask she could see his eyes go soft as he told her to not be sorry.
Rryn left to go check on Tai, and left her in the care of Angelique and Isk. Mallory sat at the table and trembled and tried to calm herself, but the tears just would not stop. Her heart was breaking and she did not know what to do. Tai came over and spoke to her in his gentle way and told her that while he could not make the pain go away, that he and her friends were there for her. She nodded her thanks and sipped at the tea. She noticed Isk watching her again, and she blushed at her outburst. He began talking with her in a very calm and soothing tone. He and Angelique listened to her as she told them about how she loved Vaen and would do anything to have him back in her life. They were very kind and offered her words of encouragement. Isk asked her kindly if she was getting enough rest, because she looked so worn out. She shook her head and admitted that the dreams were turning into nightmares and he nodded understandingly. He asked if she would try one of his wife’s remedies, as it would not do anyone any good for her to collapse from exhaustion. She blushed again, because she did not want to cause anymore trouble, and truthfully her lack of sleep was affecting her work and she did not want to make Mister Poet and Miss Cat angry. She sighed softly and nodded. Isk and Angelique were very much like family, their sons almost like her own brothers, and she knew they would only want the best for her. Isk had Angelique go to her house and she returned with a small pouch of what looked like very fine sugar. Angelique explained that it was best used in tea, and watched as Mallory added a little to her tea and nodded. Isk told her that it would help ease the pain, as much as could be eased until Vaen returned, and help her if nothing else to get the rest she so much needed. She thanked them for their kindness and sipped her tea expecting an unpleasant taste. She remembered her mother giving her medicine as a child, and remembered the horrible taste, but this did not seem to be as horrible. She smiled gratefully at Isk and Angelique and appreciated their kindness.
Mallory sighed again and got up out of bed. She decided that one more cup of tea and a bit more medicine wouldn’t hurt. She went upstairs and made a cup of hot tea and added a spoonful of the powder then looking at it she added another. After all… if a little helped a little… maybe more would help more… She finished her tea and went down to her bed where she fell asleep and dreamed that she and Vaen were back in Ilshenar… _________________ Good friends are like stars.
