Mallory sighed softly to herself as she readied herself for bed. It had been an eventful past few days, and not in the way she would like. She had received a request from Miss Sadira to assist with the opening of her new inn and restaurant, The Candlelight Inn. She had agreed, and was glad to have something to occupy her mind, especially after last night. She sighed and began emptying her pack and soon she found what she was searching for. She pulled out the familiar green robe and held it close to herself as she laid there thinking about the past few days.

Vaen had sent her a letter asking her to meet with him and she had made sure she could get away from the healers for the evening. She looked forward to seeing him, it was the first time they had been able to have time together, just the two of them. She had wanted to see him, but every time something had seemed to come up and keep them apart. When he had been thrown into the abyss, her heart had broken into a million pieces, and there were times she had walked to the edge and contemplated joining him there. The only thing that had kept her from doing so had been those at the Garden, and her new devotion to helping those at the healers in Moonglow. Everytime she assisted in aiding a fallen soldier, it made her think of Vaen and how he had given himself to bring safety to those he loved and cared about.

She rolled over and a single tear rolled down onto her pillow and she reached up and brushed it away. Last night had been one of the most difficult in her young life. She didn’t know what Vaen had wanted to see her about, but she knew it wasn’t good as soon as she saw his face. They had grown very close in such a short time, there was little they had ever been able to hide from each other. When she looked at him, his face a mixture of emotions, her heart fell. Could it be that the time apart had changed his feelings for her? She still loved him with all of her heart and being, and hoped that she would not hear the words that were about to be spoken. They went to a private area, and Mallory sat down and looked up at Vaen, preparing herself for the worst.

The tears started flowing freely now as she remembered the tender way Vaen had taken her hand and asked her not to be mad with him… or hate him. How could she ever hate him? True, she had wanted to scream and shout, but she remained calm and just nodded. How could she hold someone somewhere where he did not want to be? It would be like caging a bird. It would never be the same. She agreed that they take some time apart, and while they acknowledged that they still loved each other, life for both was at the least confusing. Vaen had said it was okay for her to cry then, for once again she could not hid how she was feeling from him, but she did not allow herself. It would be selfish to cry, after everything she had prayed for was here. Here he was alive… how could she ask for more?

After their talk she excused herself with the excuse of running errands for Miss Sadira, but what she truly did was go to a spot in Ilshenar that she had found by pure accident and there is where she let go of her tears. She sat next to the calm waters and allowed the sweet melodies of the pixies to comfort her. These were the times that she missed her mother… She watched the pixies and soon made her way back to the Garden.

Mallory turned back over and as she did she caught a glimpse of the purple petals Vaen had given her. She pondered over his actions tonight at the Inn. She had not told people about them, for it was frankly none of their business, and anyone who knew them would figure it out soon enough on their own. She knew he was going to be there, after all she had invited him herself. It was strange, but at the end of the night as she was leaving and saying her goodnights to Miss Sadira, Vaen suddenly started waving his arms about like a madman shouting out into the empty room. Mallory was first concerned that he had drank too much, but noticing he had nothing on his table she wondered if he had hit his head. He told her to be careful and she said goodnight and headed back to the Garden. It wasn’t until she got there that she realized how tired she was. She said goodnight to Tai and excused herself to the bath.

Mallory leaned over to blow out the candle next to her bed and as she did she said her ritual prayer to the Virtues and to her mother… and once again she included Vaen in her prayers. Then she blew out the light and held the robe closer to herself as she drifted off to sleep…

*Letter sent to Mallory*

Lady Mallory,

Lord Vaen had told me of his sacrifice upon your love, for the greater good of you both, though I know this to be hard for you beyond his scope of thought. Though we have known each other barely, consider me a friend in your times of saddness. Myself and another whom I know would be glad to console you in such times, simple wish to say, don't hold back the tears, they are natural. Yet should you need a shoulder to cry at or a person to scream your doubts at, there are those who are willing and able to do so.

You are young Mallory, and your life will be filled with great sadness and joys through out it. This is but a stop along the road of your life, take comfort in knowing that life goes on and all scars heal.

Vaen sighed as he returned to his home after breaking the news to Mallory. He wanted to cry infront of her, but he knew it would be best if he held it in. Or would it?

He removed his armor and laid in bed. At the end of the bed was the pink ribbon that Mallory sent to him that sealed a letter. He brought his hands up to his face to wipe away a tear that was forming in his eye.

"Mallory, I'm sorry... but this is the best for us..." he said aloud to himself, knowing that no one could hear him. "I do love you but.... damnit.... I don't know. I ...." Vaen began to sob silently. He fought back tears and then began to speak again. "I just hope you don't hate me... despite what you have said..."

Vaen pulled the covers up over him and laid in bed, staring at the ceiling. He would lay there for hours, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. He felt he has put too much pain on the shoulders of one who didn't deserve it. However, was it for the best? Vaen thought so. Vaen believed that it would be best to end it, rather than have a relationship that went from letter to letter because of their obligations. Vaen didn't hate Mallory because of her obligations, in fact he admired her for them. But, a relationship cannot last without interaction. Vaen knew this. And though he cared for her very much, that is why he made this decision.

After tossing and turning for hours, Vaen finally fell asleep, with only one thing on his mind. Mallory.
