Genna rode through the trees and into the field dotted with brightly colored tents. She smiled and watched as some of the gypsy children chased one another, laughing and falling over each other.
Anna stood at the largest tent soaking up the morning sunshine and watching. Anna reminded Genna of a proud eagle watching over her young. All who were in the camp were family and all were loved and protected by Anna.
As if she already knew they had company Anna looked towards the little knoll Genna had been sitting on and waved her over. Genna smiled and dismounted. She let the horse roam knowing he would not go far.
Genna walked to Anna and was swept into a strong hug, surprising from such a small woman.
They spoke of the weather and the clan of gypsies. Anna asked Genna the reason for this visit after being gone for the past few months. Genna told her it was for two reasons, one a warning and the other was personal. Anna listened as Genna explained the dangers in Britain. She told Anna of the things she had seen herself and of the reports she had heard. She told Anna to be very careful in the weeks ahead and to always be on guard. Anna thanked her and reassured Genna that gypsies were always on their guard.
Anna waved away anymore talk of immanent threats and looked deeply into Genna’s eyes.
“ You are a daughter to me even though we share no blood. That is the gypsy way. When you came to us with Vingo’me you were an orphan. We became your family and it will always be so. You come to see us today more content. Tell me what has happened.”
Anna and Genna sat outside the large tent in the sunlight. Genna told Anna of the people she had met and the place she had taken in her new life. She told her of being in service to the Duke and Duchess of Blackwind, how she had so much respect for them and how she was treated with respect in return.
She told Anna of the path she was on to one day being called a Blackwind Knight. She spoke of her old friends Vahn Shino and Matsu the Mage, how they too had come to be in service of the Duke and Duchess. She told Anna of the new friend she had made inside the Blackwind realm, Liza the mace fighter in training whom she had grown close to. She talked of the respect she had for the Knights of Blackwind , Sir Sid, Sue and Lalady.
They talked for hours and Anna told Genna it was time to wash the widow’s tint from her hair. Genna looked startled but before she could object Anna spoke to her.
“You have healed from your loss. The pain of that loss will never leave but it has faded to the point in which you can go on and once again be happy, able to build a meaningful life.”
Genna smiled and held still while Anna took the powder from the pouch at her waist. She told Genna to tilt her head back and using a pitcher of water washed the blue tint from Genna’s hair, leaving her with the auburn color she was born with.
As the night began to creep in a fire was built and music was played. When the music had died down Genna’s voice raised in a goodbye song to the man and the life she once knew.
