Gohan found himself walking about the streets of Magincia, a deceivingly calm night, cool with the sea breeze of the early evening. He kept replaying the events of the past few days in his mind, looking for solutions, looking for the things he should have done, the things he didn't think of, the thngs he couldn't think of. He saw Mark's face as he writhed in pain in the beds of the healer's building. He looked over to his brother Mazuki, whose strongest magics could not touch the deadly disease. He remembered that he wanted to contact Alizia, who so dilligently worked to find a cure for the deadly plague that devastated the small island some time ago. But Mark was stubborn, he thought that he would simply come out of it. And Gohan bought it. Even as Mark's health slowly dwindled, Gohan felt he had to abide by his wishes, he didn't have the heart to go against the wishes of his mentor, master, and dearest friend.
As the sun fell throughout the sky, leaving the island in almost total darkness, a new kind of darkness fell over Gohan, as he struggled with himself to figure out what to do next. Drake had buried himself in work, planning the commemoration ceremony, sending letters out to the people Mark had respected and loved. He laughed to himself, the noise almost shocking him in the night. "That Drake is doing all the work I should be doing," he mumbled to himself. His slow walking pace led him outside the tavern, and he looked inside. Seeing nothing that shook him from his current mood, he kept walking about the streets, heading towards the Magicka.
His mind wandered. What should he be doing next? A storm of thoughts suddenly entered his mind. He had forgotten his duties. He was abandoning his duty to Mark, as his student, as his successor to Humanis, and as his friend. He was letting Drake do all of the work. The least he could do was write a damn letter to Alizia, to tell her why he couldn't send notice to her, to maybe put her heart at ease. He shook his head. His words couldn't do that... could they?
His eyes looked up, in the blackness of the night, and he saw the glittering torches of the Magicka, coming up to him as suddenly as a beast out in the wilderness. He stepped inside, and walked up the stairs to the meeting place he'd been to hundreds of times. Only this time it seemed different. Never before had this place seemed so empty, even when he was alone. He sat down at the head of the table heavily, as if his boots were suddenly filled with lead.
He must have fallen asleep, because when he looked up, he saw his younger brother Mazuki sitting in the chair nearest to him. Mazuki looked at his face knowingly, and Gohan fought the urge to break down under the gaze of his brother. He finally rose and said "Mazuki, I have work to do. I am failing Mark right now by my inaction. I have to make sure that his legacy is never forgotten." Mazuki simply nodded in response. With that, Gohan walked out of the Magicka to his office, as the sun began to rise, he felt the sun purifying his efforts.
His thoughts were now of the good times, of his Humanis brothers, of the things they have accomplished, of the unity during difficult time, of the brotherhood during good times. He was not going to let that die. He owed, at the very least, that much to Mark. He finally arrived at his office, and began to think out the day's activities. _________________
