Late one evening within a chamber deep underground she worked. Her experiments progressed well, how she looked forward to completion. Halfway through melding two bones together her eyes opened wide with terror, something was horribly amiss. A sharp pain shot through her arm, only ceasing once she stopped using her wretched ability. Despite being accustomed to pain from the many experiments she conducted on herself, she shrieked. This pain was different, it was unnerving. Something emptied from her, this unknown force from deep within her. Steadying herself by leaning on the table, she looked at her hands, examining the black skull markings upon her palms. Something terrible had happened.
The door of her room clanged loudly, she quickly looked up and stared at the door, much like deer might react to the sound of a twig snapping in the woods. It was him, he could feel it too. He was younger than her, and much weaker, how terrified he must have been to not care if it was iron his fist pounded against. She quickly darted to the door, lest he speed up the rate of this horrifying drain.
"Calm down, please... you are only speeding it up."
She looked upon him, his body was visibly showing the effects of the drain.
"Calm down? What is happening?! I can feel my strength leaving rapidly, am I being destroyed?!?"
He was frantic, and rightfully so. She could only imagine how fast he was losing his strength.
"I don't know what is happening. Please, stay calm so we can try and conserve our strength. There must be a reason. I am suffering too, we absolutely must keep our wits about and work together."
She had to calm him down. She doubted he would be destroyed, but...
"I.. This fatigue comes over me... It's.. Please, help me....."
Too much of his strength was being drained too quickly. She could still feel this leeching force clawing at her as well. Once his energy was gone, he probably would slip into torpor.
"....I... I can't.. face final... final... no, I can't. Is this... Is.. this what it... feels like...?"
His thoughts were becoming erratic and he was stuttering, he was losing himself rapidly. It was up to her to prepare resting places, if this wretched force kept up she would be joining him.
"Calm down, please. You will not face final death, did your sire not teach you about torpor? It is a long rest, you can be awoken from it. What we are experiencing is... unusual, but it is simply our energy leaving us, our flesh is not decaying or burning away as if some force was destroying us."
Or so she hoped, taking his hand and pulling him into another room.
"This room I use for storing material for my experiments, but it will serve as a safe resting place"
She swept bones off a stone sarcophagus with her arm in a single swift motion, and pulled the lid off it. She had stolen it several months ago while searching for bones and decided it would make a good container for them. Never did she suspect she might actually use it for its intended purpose. She scooped out the bones she kept in it as quickly as possible onto the floor, and looked back up to him.
"There.. quickly, get in. You will wake again someday. I am not weakening as quickly, there is someone I trust who can watch over you... And me if I continue as you are."
He simply nodded, too drowsy to think of a better solution, and proceeded to lie down in the sarcophagus.
She quickly pulled the lid back onto the protective stone sarcophagus and leaned on it with her arms to gather her thoughts. She realized her power wasn't draining as fast anymore, something else was taking effect. She felt the center of her body begining to feel sharp pain, as though something was emerging within her. Bounding up the stairs, through the main hallway, and out the front doors she left to find her trusted friend, ignoring whatever pain ripped through her body. Almost instinctively, she lept high into the air and onto the branch of a tree, and lept from tree to tree, avoiding the thick tangle of plantlife on the ground below.
Since gaining her new strength she hadn't travelled using her native strengths often, familiarity swept over her in this overpowering sensation. She flexed her hand and grappled onto a branch, digging her claws into it. A familiar pain seeped through her as she let out a bestial roar and lept into the air like a dragon taking flight, only to collpase on the ground after landing. |
