"Mallory..."

Mallory was dreaming about her childhood friend Jenny and she was calling for her down the road, but she just couldn't reach her...

"Mallory!"

Mallory opened her eyes and saw her best friend Rryn standing there in the doorway grinning. "Are you going to get up sleepyhead or sleep the day away?" Mallory looked out the window and noticed the sun starting to peek over the trees. "What time is it?" she asked sleepily, starting to pull the covers back up over her head. Rryn came in and said "It is already half way to noon" as she sat on the edge of the bed. "Do you still want to start training with me?" she asked in her soft voice. Mallory peeked out from under the nice warm blankets and spied the purple rose petals by her bed. Yes, it would be hard work, she knew this, but it would be so worth it. She sat up and stretched and told Rryn she would be right down.

She hurried downstairs and found Rryn waiting paitiently for her. They grabbed their mounts and headed to the training grounds. They spent a good deal of time there, Mallory slowly improving with each swing and strike. They stopped and ate their lunches, and Mallory thought about Vaen. There wasn't many a time during the day that he wasn't on her mind. Rryn chatted away while eating about how Tai had asked Mister Poet for courting permission, and that after some discussion had been granted permission. This of course made Rryn as happy as a lark on the first day of spring. Mallory smiled, happy to see her friend so excited and happy. She looked out at the sea and wondered what Jenny would think. Many a day they would lie on the banks of Minoc watching ships go by, making up stories about princes coming to rescue them from the dragons (the dragons being Jenny's pesky brothers...) Mallory sighed to herself and turned her attention back to her training.

By afternoon, Mallory had become weary and decided it was time to call it a day. She went to the garden and after depositing her armor into a spare chest, she made her way upstairs to the bath. After making sure no one, especially that Murdoc, wasn't creeping around she closed and locked the doors and got the bath ready. After making sure the water was the right temperture she added a few drops of the fragranced oil she had made. It smelled like lilacs from the spring. She stepped gingerly in and allowed herself to again be taken away by dreams... She was lying in a field of wildflowers... birds were all around...deer were calmly drinking from the brook nearby. She had never been here, yet it felt familiar. She felt the warm sun upon her face and she laid back to soak it all in...

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!!!

Mallory quickly sat up and realized she had once again been dreaming. She shook her head and quickly said "I will be right out..." She quickly toweled off and slipped her robe back on and opened the door, only to find no one there. "That was odd..." she thought to herself, but hurried to her room to get dressed.

Mallory still had not gone to Moonglow to restock from the evening before, so she left a note to the minstrels to tell them that was where she was. When she arrived home she was surprised, and happy, to see Vaen there. She asked him to wait a moment while she unloaded and he agreed. They talked about their days, and what they had done. She failed to mention her training, saying she had spent the day with Rryn. They had just made plans to go for a nice walk, when a messenger came suddenl saying Vaen was needed immediately. Vaen sighed and turned to look at Mallory. Although the slightest look from him sent the butterflies in her stomach to a virtual war, she tried her best to remain composed. She smiled and nodded in understanding. He had warned her this was how his life was, but she couldn't imagine not having him in her life, and so it would be something she would have to deal with.

After he left Mallory got the patrons of The Garden involved in a game of guessing. They seemed to be enjoying themselves and soon Vaen had returned. The game quickly wrapped up and although Mallory was getting extremely tired from her day of activity, she agreed to going with Vaen to Minoc. She showed him where her old house had once stood, where she had spent many a day playing with Jenny, where her father had worked in the mine... they ended at the spot where she and Jenny had laid looking out at the ships waiting for their princes. Mallory smiled to herself thinking this, and told Vaen about her childhood days. The two of them spent what felt like minutes, but was in actuality a few hours, talking, watching the waves and enjoying the time they could spend just the two of them. The relaxing waves were nice, but they made her realize how tired... and how sore... she really was. Although she didn't want to, she heard herself asking Vaen to see her home. She hoped that he realized how much she treasured the time together.

When they reached the Garden, they said their goodnights and she headed upstairs. She hoped that she wasn't coming down with the flu. Her heart was beating faster than it ever had in her life, even more than when she had been caught in the wisp dungeon. Her stomach had knots in it, worse than the wool she sometimes found on the bear rug upstairs. She shook her head and got ready for bed. Her body ached, but that was from the training, she was sure. She brushed her hair out and a leaf from their walk fell out and she placed it next to the purple petals. As she looked at the petals her heart again skipped a beat. She sighed and thought to herself... "I shall ask Mister Poet about this tomorrow.."

She blew out the candle and crawled under the blankets and fell fast asleep...
