Mallory woke up with one thing on her mind… Vaen. She was so relieved last night to find out he was alive. She had nearly tackled him when he appeared at Poet’s Tavern, and she didn’t even care who saw her. It had only been a few hours before that a strange being as well as a few Orcs had told her that Vaen was indeed dead. Her heart hit the floor and she could not see due to the sudden anger. She had always had a bit of a temper, but with Mister Tai’s help she had been working on it, knowing that her actions would have consequences. Had it not been for her best friend Rryn being there she didn’t know what she would have done.
Mister Thormear, whom she didn’t care for very much, had arrived and she relayed the information to him. He took her downstairs to speak to her asking her what she had heard and what had happened. During the conversation he told her to lower her voice and she instantly lost her temper and yelled at him telling him he would never tell her what to do. He seemed amused with her spirit and she was quickly apologetic, for it wasn’t him she was really angry with. She just had so many emotions… fear and anger the most prevalent. Where did these feelings come from?? She was more frustrated because while she wanted to do something, Mister Thormear wouldn’t let her leave the tavern… something about not wanting to have to rescue two people. She reluctantly agreed. It wouldn’t do her any good since she was only good at cooking… not like she could feed them to death. “It wouldn’t always be that way” she thought to herself.
She went back upstairs and wiped the tears off her face on the robe that one of Mister Vaen’s men had given her the other night. She found it comforting to wear it, it kept her warm. Sweet little Auris was waiting for her upstairs. The child had become very comforting in his own way. She smiled as he offered her a little handkerchief and she wiped her eyes on it and asked him if he was hungry. He shook his head and behind the mask she could see his eyes were dark and he was upset. He wanted to know what was wrong with his Mallry, but how do you explain to a child about death? She did not feel that was her place and shook her head and told him she was just tired from the busy night last night. He didn’t seem to believe her and continued to stay close to her while she cleaned off the tables, trying to keep her mind busy.
She looked around the tavern, her friends all close by and realized how extremely lucky she was. It was then that Vaen himself came up on the teleporter. She couldn’t believe her eyes! He wasn’t dead!! Here he was, standing in front of her… She ran over and hugged him tight to make sure that he was really there. He laughed a bit and said “You like my ribbon that much, eh?” She looked up and noticed he had tied his hair back with the pink ribbon she had sent along with the letter.
She wiped the tears from her eyes and told him how she had thought he was dead and everything that had happened. He looked at her and asked “Now why would anyone say I was dead… unless…” He sighed and shook his head. “What is it?” Mallory asked. Vaen looked at her a little sad, “Do you remember the story I told you? The one about my friend Marcus and our fight? Well, I think that it was him that you met here tonight…” He sighed again and shook his head. Mallory reached over and took his hand trying to offer him some comfort, but was scared herself knowing that this couldn’t be a good thing. After talking a bit more with the other Legion members, Vaen took her to a beautiful place where they spent the remainder of the evening talking, watching the waves and just enjoying being together.
As much as Mallory didn’t want the night to end and have to leave Vaen’s side, she knew it was inevitable. Vaen saw her safely back to the Garden and said their goodnights. As Mallory was falling asleep she rolled over and looked at the purple rose petals he had given her earlier in the evening. She spoke out into the night “Mother… if you are watching, please watch over us both…” She rolled back over and finally fell asleep with Vaen on her mind… _________________ Good friends are like stars.
