Steel laid twisting, tossing, and turning, unable to sleep. Something in his mind knew that sleeping meant not waking up. The runes that still burned around the wound to his chest would not let him forget that his time has come. Forcing himself to sit up through the excruciating pain, Steel began to write the last letter he would ever write.
Knowing that I failed to protect myself, I feel I can no longer protect your town.
To Rowen Starspan and Talin Rabbitbane:
I leave my power and position as General of the Wilmeth Guard to Talin, with the permission of Rowen. May you have a less painful fate as mine. And Talin, please take care of the dwarf.

As he began to sign his name, his hand went limp, and the quill sent a stream of ink across the page. A knock on the door introduced a monk in the doorway, who, upon seeing Steel, bowed his head in mourning, picked up the letter, and began his trip to the Crossroads Tavern.
