As Alessandra walked about Dark Cove in the very early morning, she wrapped her arms around herself. She had never realized how cold it truly was here until now. She walked alongside of the water, the waves making a gentle noise against the shore. She looked around her and she wondered when this area had become so lifeless and grey. The trees had long ago lost their leaves in anticipation of the cold snows about to come. There were few birds in the skies and what plants did grow were so brittle and twisted they looked as though they themselves were monsters. How Alessandra missed the green and lush vegetation of Luna. When she was a child growing up in Minoc, Alessandra was always drawn to the grasses and flowers of the fields. Perhaps that is why she was so often drawn away to the magical lands of her biological mother in Ilshenar.
Her eyes fell to the large stone tower that had belonged to Lord Mave and his friend Lord Tiggareus. The home was now standing empty, still full of items, but empty none the less. There were no longer the sounds of laughter coming from the home. She walked about the tower, recalling the laughter of Lord Inkari, and Sir Joseph Galigore, and many others that had parted from this land, for reasons unknown. She remembered when she first met Lord Tiggareus in Sanctus, how they immediately became the best of friends, and in time their friendship had blossomed into a deep romance. How long ago that seemed. It had been Lord Tiggareus that had introduced her to Dark Cove. They had spent many afternoons here, and never had she felt as cold as she did now. She walked over to the tower, and went inside.
She entered the great hall area and lit a fire in the fireplace, to take the chill off the early morning, and lit a lantern as well. She looked about the room and looked at the books that had been collected by Lord Mave and Lord Tiggareus. She remembered how they had often asked her if she saw any new books, to add them to their collection. Over time they had created quite a library. Odd, there were a few that seemed to be missing, but which ones they were she could not be certain. She noticed a few books by the fireplace and went to pick them up, only to find the pages missing. How odd she thought to herself as she returned the books to the table. As she did she knocked a journal from the table and it opened to a page where she saw the familiar writing of Lord Tiggareus. She glanced at it quickly, but not wanting to invade his privacy she returned the book to a special hiding place he had shown her. It would remain safe there until he returned.
Alessandra lit an additional lantern and walked about the tower remembering the first time she had come here, and remembering how she had thought the tower needed a lady’s touch. She smiled to herself as she remembered Lord Tiggareus putting up with her bringing plants here to brighten the tower. How she missed his smile and laughter when she would get upset about something. Feisty is what he used to call her. He was the one who was there when she was missing her home and family, the one who was there when she needed someone to talk to, the one who was there… always there. How she wished he was here now, to make sense of everything.
Like, why was it that Beowulf Thormear her dear friend, now was dead? He had been so happy, about to marry his love Tatiana, giddy as a school boy preparing for it. She grinned remembering how excited he had been and how he had asked her opinion of the place for the proposal. How could it be that someone that had everything to live for, suddenly not be alive? The sudden disappearance of Lord Mave also had her puzzled. It had happened unexpectedly, one day he was there leading the guild meeting, and since then no one had heard from him. Not even Lady Lia from Vesper. The poor woman was so upset over his disappearance she had taken ill herself. Alessandra wondered if it hadn’t had something to do with the skullies she had heard about from Ditto, the same ones that had held her captive until… until one of them showed compassion and brought her home… She wondered why every time she had mentioned something to Tarothin he had dismissed her, like she was a child who was playing with make believe friends.
As she made her way upstairs in the tower she stopped in the smithing room and glanced about. Something was different in here, though she couldn’t place her finger on it. It had not been used in quite sometime, since the blacksmith that had been hired on by Lord Mave for the guild had also disappeared. Alessandra suspected that the smith knew something and had gone into hiding, but where she had no idea. The tower sounded so quiet and hollow without the smith here working. She left the room and continued upstairs to the council chambers. When she entered the grand room tears sprang to her eyes as she remembered the wonderful feasts they had had there and the stories that had been told. Lord Maundor had been a wonderful storyteller. He also disappeared from the realm, very suddenly and without word. She looked about the room and turned and closed the door and made her way up to the roof, where they had held the guild meetings. She walked over to the table, and smiled gently as she looked at the scroll at her place. It held more meaning to her then most would understand.
She walked to the edge of the roof of the tower and looked out upon Dark Cove. This was the place she had called home for quite some time, yet now she was not sure if she belonged here. She had felt a tugging at her heart to leave, but she felt that she was bound by honor to stay. Granted, she had made many friends here, but she was more and more becoming uncomfortable with what she was seeing done. The terrible beatings of the citizens for the non-payment of taxes, the way the children of the village scurried to get away from her, when all she wanted to do was pick them up and hug them.
As she looked over Dark Cove, her gaze settled on a lone figure making its way towards the Armunn residence. Alessandra looked harder and realized it was Imyrr, Ditto and Tarothin’s teenage daughter. As far as children go Imyrr was an interesting one. Alessandra had yet to meet her face to face, but had heard the whisperings of the children, and even adults, of the village, but then again she had heard what they said about her, and that was not true. Imyrr paused for a moment and Alessandra thought maybe she had seen her. When Imyrr continued on her way Alessandra assumed Imyrr was just making sure she would get in the house without waking anyone. Alessandra laughed quietly and thought about what a handful Ditto had. How she wished that she had more time to spend with Ditto, but now that Ditto was not only a wife but a mother, her time seemed rather limited.
She glanced back down to Dark Cove, this time her eyes settling on Beowulf and Tatiana’s home. She had spoken with Tatiana at Poet’s the other evening and had learned of her being with child. She had not seen her here in Dark Cove, which was understandable. Alessandra made a mental note to seek her out and make sure she was taking care of herself. It would not do for her to lose the child to grief. How excited Beowulf would be to know he was going to be a father. Alessandra smiled and looked back to the sea and wondered what it would be like to be someone’s wife and raise children. She shook her head and looked back to the Armunn home. She wondered if Ditto would mind having company. She made her way back down the tower and stepped outside. _________________ Ken: I don't put anything in my mouth I don't intend on swallowing...
