|
Vaughan returned quickly to his employer after the auction anxious to report the events.
"Seven arrived with invitations, each represented an invited one. Three women and four men. I relayed the detailed history of the chest as you instructed. How it was buried and forgotten in the Coliseum, how it was then turned into the Garden of Sin and Desire and then to Poet's Garden. How it burned to the ground and in the reconstruction the chest was found. How it contains the 2 magic scrolls and the journal of Tarothin outlining how and where to use them to send the demon, and him with it, to the Abyss. The bidding started and rapidly went up to a hundred thousand. Several bidders remained in to two hundred thousand. From there on it seemed to be just two men bidding. The one in the straw hat asked the other how high he would go. The one in the briads indicated he would go as high as it took to obtain the chest. They bantered the bidding back and forth, with the braided man winning out. At six hundred thousand gold coins!" Vaughan's young face still showing his astonishment.
"Here is the contact information for his employer that the braided man wrote down for me," he says as he hands over the log book.
The cloaked figure nods slowly taking the book. "I shall contact him immediately and arrange for transfer of the chest. You have done very well. I shall remember you should I have future need for your services. Take this home for your family."
The young courier's eyes widen as he is handed a check for more gold than he has seen in his lifetime until now, having only been expecting another pouch of coins.
"I will gladly work for you at any time. I feel there is much I could learn from you. The auction was wise indeed. You obviously put much thought into the guest list and got just the ones there that would bring you a fine profit."
" Ahh, yes," opening the log book and reading the name of the buyer. "I had a feeling this one would be most interested in the chest. I thought there was one who would be more interested, but that is of no matter. The bid is an excellent profit for my meager investment in comparision."
With a simple handshake the two part ways, the courier having found a new profession as an auctioneer and potential new repeat employer though he had yet to see under the hood or have a formal introduction. This did not tarnish the luster on the gold he now had to take home to his parents and siblings. They would all make it well through the winter, perhaps a new cloak for his mother as well. The fact that his employer remained such a mystery to him was of little concern.
(OOC- hope this series and event has been of interest to some of you. Stayed tuned for the reveal in the next edition) |
