Cuthbert rode out of the moongate onto Yews somewhat soggy soil and looked around. "Cant beleive there's so many people who want this place... Its mostly swamp... Whats that smell...?" His horse stepped between the large white stones surrounding the moongate circle and trotted off towards Empath Abbey.

*****

As he rode up he was immediately confronted by two guards in AoF clothing, one man, one woman. The woman approached him. "Something I can do for you today sir?"
"Aye, is Arlin around?"
She shook her head "Nay he isnt. Is there something I can help you with?"
"I was supposed to meet him here..." Cuth said "Might I wait inside for his arrival?"
The AoF guard nodded and stepped aside. Cuth swung the doors of the Abbey open and stepped inside. Walking down the long central corridor, he happened to notice an Elven woman strolling about. Feeling in a particulalry good mood that evening, Cuth decided to strike up a converstaion with her until Arlin arrived. Her name was Tari, and Cuth took an immediate liking to her. They talked of Yew, which was apparently where she was from and about the different groups present in the city at the time. Arlin entered the Abbey a short time later, at which point Tari departed, leaving Arlin and Cuthbert to their meeting.

Arlin showed Cuth to his office in the Abbey and sat down. "So, what ye be needin Cuthy?"
"Ive noticed there are quite a few groups claiming control of this city... Im wondering what the story is."
Arlin grinned. "There is no story. City's mine. Plain and simple."
Cuth nodded a bit. "I noticed Lylith has been elected mayor of the Yew Council...?"
"Aye, shes Mayor all right. The Council's done nothing with this city for too long. Look around you, the city aint what it used to be. But its mine now, and I'll be changin all that. Long as she dont get in my way, she can be Lord British for all I care."
Cuth laughed a bit. "I see. Well I hope ye know that if push comes to shove and there's a dispute over control of Yew, AoF has my support and the support of my men."
Arlin nodded. "I thank ye for that. And ye should know you have my support as well, for whatever you need."
Cuthbert nodded and thanked Arlin. They chatted for a short while before Cuth took his leave.

He nodded to the AoF guards as he left the Abbey and rubbed Rusher's head for a few minutes. The horse didnt like being in the swamps, and Cuth wasnt sure he could blame him. He settled into the saddle and began to ride back toward the moongate when he came across Tari again, this time chopping wood. They talked again, idle chatter about the town and about their respective skills. They parted ways after deciding that Cuth would show her around Jhelom some time since she hadnt yet seen his island home. He smiled as he continued on toward the moongate. The meeting with Arlin had gone very well, and he had enjoyed talking with this Elf very much. An added bonus. He hoped he'd run into her again. In the back of his mind, he was fairly sure that he would.

[forgive me for writing this under Katya's name, rather than registering "Tari Elsenar" on the boards...she's one of my alts, newly made.]

Tari Elsenar smiled as she completed her transactions with the Yew bowyer. The unexpected pleasure of her conversation with Cuthbert had wiped clean her irritation over being questioned at the doors of the Abbey. She was a bit embarrassed by her slight rudeness to the two guards of the Frontier army, but…well, she certainly wasn’t thrilled with being questioned by strangers in an area that had been her home for decades.

She inclined her head slightly toward the somewhat flustered bowyer and headed back out into the woods. As always the crisp air invigorated her…and freed her from all petty concerns. Like so many others, she remembered Yew before the swamps, but to her, it hardly mattered. Time changed everything…cities, rulers, landscapes. Yew’s recent history was a tiny, tiny thing against that huge backdrop.

She sank gracefully to the ground next to the trunk of a massive Yew tree. Its branches spread out above her, a roof built stronger and lovelier than anything devised by man or elf. Yew was a special place. She had told Cuthbert that Yew was the only human city she could tolerate…but it was more than that. Yew was simply…special. Why else would so many beings over such a long time try to take or keep control of this spread-out, tiny, inconvenient place? They simply felt a tiny spark of what Tari felt as an all-encompassing warmth.

Or perhaps it's the winery, she thought, and laughed aloud. Nearby, a kingfisher fluttered about nervously at the burst of sound. Grinning, she apologized out loud to the tiny creature, then watched it fly away, squawking, as a horse thundered down a nearby road. Perhaps another soldier. As the sound of hoofbeats receded, she sat back, leaning against the tree trunk. Soon, she was lost in thought again.

Cuthbert had seemed rather insightful…especially for a warrior. She looked forward to more conversation with him…or even perhaps that tour he offered, of the island occupied by his soldiers. With his endorsement, she had promised to keep her irritation at the latest developments in Yew to a minimum. As if the occasional snide remarks of one solitary elf who lives in the woods actually mattered, she chided herself. She had no desire to rule over anything but her own actions. A long, long life spent among the trees seemed like sheer perfection.

As for Yew, well…the city had been through much already, and as for the success of the latest set of occupiers…as in all things, only time would tell.
