Phyrra stood outside the tavern talking to a man she had met the other night named Dan. They were just catching up on the last few days when Dymm came up behind her and stood a few steps away from her and Dan. She gave him a quick smile and nod when Dan turned away from her to look at Dymm. Dan was a nice man, but he was very curious. He had asked her too many questions the other night, and he seemed very suspicious of Dymm. Dymm gave her a quick nod in return, and ask to speak to her when she was free.
Phyrra nodded to him and replied, "I'm free now. Dan, it was good seeing you again. Take care."
Phyrra turned away quickly and started to walk away before Dan could ask anymore questions. She opened a moongate to Dymm's on his request of discussing business in private.
Once inside Dymm sat in his chair and told Phyrra to have a seat. "Phyrra, do you think you're ready to take on a job?" She looked at him and nodded very slowly. She had been training hard day and night for the last few days. She thought that she knew enough to pull of a job, but the only true test would be to actually go through with it.
"I guess I'm as ready as I'll get."
"Well if you're not ready that's fine. There's no pressure." He gave her a little reassuring smile and she quickly told him that she was ready. "Alright, do you know of a man named Valatin?" She shook her head that she didn't and Dymm continued on. "Well he is apart of the Legion of Justice I believe, with Vaen Swiftar and Rachel Corbinis."
Phyrra looked at him almost in shock. "Yes, I've heard of the Legion. I know someone who is apart of it."
"Good." He smiled. "Then if you are willing to do this, we will be able to fill two contracts. This one and the other one that we have been working on."
"I'll do it." Phyrra was scared out of her mind, but she knew that she had to do this to prove herself to the rest of the assassins, and to Artero especially. He was the one who had voiced his lack of trust towards her. If she did not prove it soon, there was no telling what might happen to her. She was in fear for her life every day that went by. He gave her a slight smirk and nodded in approvement.
"If you complete this contract you'll be an Ace." He pulled out his deck of cards and shuffled through them. Phyrra waited for what seemed an eternity. The time had come, she was finally going to become an Ace. "We'll say Valatin is the Jack of Clubs." He laid the card down on the table face up. "We have two Aces left, Hearts and Clubs. Which one do you want?" Phyrra thought for a moment and finally spoke, "Hearts." Dymm gave a nod and a little smile. "That is the one I would have chose for you also." He put the card down on top of the other.
"Take your time Phyrra, and be careful. Make sure you do not do it in too public of a place or you could get caught. We don't want you risking your life more than you have to." He proceeded to give her more advice and told her once again to be extra careful. "I have some paperwork to do. If you have any questions please feel free to stop by." Phyrra gave him a small smile, opened her runebook and recalled to the Inn where she had been staying. She needed to think about how she was going to go about this.
**********************************************************
Phyrra laid in her bed staring at the ceiling of her room. She didn't know what time it was, but she knew that it was almost dawn from the light starting to come into her room. She had been up all night tossing and turning. Her stomach was in knots. She felt sick, and her mind was just twirling with so many thoughts. She didn't know how she was going to find this man, Valatin, or even how she was going to pull the whole thing off without risking her own life. She knew that if she failed, her life would end just as her father's did. She thought of her father and smiled. She missed him so, and wished he was there to advise her and give her the comfort that she needed at that moment. But that would never happen again. He was gone.
Phyrra let out a sigh and turned over in her bed, this time to face the wall. She closed her eyes slowly, letting the fatigue finally over take her... She would think about it more after she had some rest.
**********************************************************
Phyrra walked into the tavern and over towards the fire place. Even though it was a fairly warm night she still had chills. She hadn't been able to get much sleep, or keep any food in her stomach. It was almost like the day after she'd had too much ale. Only this was different. This wasn't any sort of ale that she had drank too much of, this was about life or death. Her life or death and another person's.
She looked up when she heard the door to the tavern open. It was fairly quiet tonight, and she was glad for it. She wasn't up to talking to anyone. The man who had come in the door staggered towards a chair at the table and almost fell out of it when he sat down. Phyrra let out a little laugh.
The man ordered another drink, and looked over towards Phyrra. His face bunching up as he squinted to see her. "Hey! You have purty eyes!" He slurred. "Just like my's wifer. You should meet her sometimes. She's boodiful." Phyrra tried not to laugh at the man's slurring. She nodded her head and thanked him for the compliment. "What's yer name lass?"
"Phyrra." She wondered if she should just leave now. She really wasn't up for talking to anyone, and felt like being alone. Even though the drunk man brought a little bit of humor to her night, she just needed to be alone and think. "Well Phyrra! Please ter meet ya!" He said, interrupting her thoughts. "My name is Vlaatin." She looked at him for a minute, and examined him closer. He wore all green, like the rest of the Legion she had run into. He carried himself with pride, even while drunk. She could see he had a fair amount of muscles, even for being a somewhat older man. "Valatin, hmm? It is a pleasure to meet you."
The man gave her a drunken nod and proceeded to carry on about his wife. Just when Phyrra was to the point of leaving, thinking she would not get her chance tonight, and not even sure that this was truely the man she was supposed to kill he mentioned the Legion of Justice. Phyrra was sure now, this was the man. She knew she had to earn his trust somehow and get him alone. Although the tavern was empty except for one man at the other table, it was still too public of a place. She asked Valatin if she could sit down at the table. When he agreed, she sat down and proceeded to talk to him about the Legion. She praised him and the Legion. She knew little about them, except for what she had heard, and what this drunken fool told her.
After a few hours or so of talking to the drunk man, he finally stood up. As he did so he almost fell flat on his face, and then came close to knocking the drinks out of the barkeep's hands. The barkeep gave him a dirty look and continued back to his work. Valatin looked back at Phyrra, "Hey! Could you help me get me horse to the stables? I'm afraid that I can't really see right." She gave Valatin a nod and smirked. "Yes, sir. I'd be more than happy to help you."
This was her chance. The way to the stables was abandoned this late at night, and the stablemaster would surely be sound asleep. She stood up and followed him out of the tavern. As they were headed to the stables, Phyrra slowly pulled her dagger out from the holster at her hips, and grabbed hold of Valatin to keep him from falling into the mud. Valatin stopped for a moment to pet his horse, and give the horse some food before taking him into the stables. She looked around quickly to make sure no one was around and saw her moment. She quickly stabbed the dagger into Valatin's back letting the poison sink into his body. She then pulled some reagents out of her pack and summoned a ball of fire sending it towards the back of Valatin's head. The poison was weakening him to the point where he was barely even able to know what was going on, let alone defend himself and retaliate. She let out another fireball at him, and saw him drop to his knees beside the horse. Phyrra thought to herself that this was it, this was the final moment. She summoned one last fireball and let it go at him. As it hit him, he dropped backwards into the mud. Blood flowing out of his wounds.
Phyrra stood for a minute and stared at the body in shock. She had done it. She had become a murderer now. Her head swirled and spun. The whole world started to spin around her. Finally getting herself under control, she pulled out an empty vial and walked over to the body. She held the vial underneath one of the wounds, letting the blood flow into it. When it was filled, she put a lid on it and put it in her pack.
She looked around to make sure no one was around still, then quickly stepped back into the shadows and headed toward the Inn to clean herself off.
**********************************************************
Phyrra threw off her armor, and quickly change clothes. The sight of the blood was making her sick, but at the same time she was relieved. She had felt a sudden change come over her when the man's body had dropped to the ground. She picked up her bag and headed out to look for Dymm...
She found him at the tavern standing in the corner away from the crowd. She walked up to him and asked to speak to him in private. He nodded and asked her if it was about business. When she nodded to him, he gave her a small smile and asked her to gate them to his place.
Once inside she told him that the job had been completed. She put the vial on the table and he stared at it for a minute. "Did anyone see you?" She shook her head slowly and replied "No, there was no one around that I saw." He gave her a small smile and nodded in approval as he walked over to a box near the wall and pulled out a peice of paper. He turned back towards her and slid it across the table. She looked down and saw that it was a check for her money. She quickly picked it up and stuffed it in her bag. "Thank you."
"That should buy you plenty of ale. " He smirked at her.
She nodded slowly, "Now I can see why you drink."
"Are you hurt?" She shook her head that she wasn't. "He was so drunk he didn't even have a chance to fight back." She let out a sigh and looked away.
"Are you alright besides physically?" She nodded. "I'm sorry you had to learn this way. I told you I wasn't much of a teacher."
"I understand. I'm going to go home and clean up some more. And hopefully get some sleep." He nodded and gave her a little smile. He looked like he was going to say something else, but decided against it. Phyrra opened her runebook and bid Dymm goodnight as she recalled to the Inn.
She had finally done it. She did not feel the sickness in her stomach at the sight of the blood on her armor. She almost felt like it belonged there. As if it was a part of her now. Her head had stopped spinning from the horrid idea of killing. It had become apart of her now. She was just like her father now. She had achieved her goal, but at what cost? |
