Slipping out onto the balcony, Sarah looks down at the square. Children running in and out of the market stalls, mothers yelling at them to slow down, merchants barking out their sales, and the budget minded crowd looking for the best deals of the day.

“My city is alive once again,” Sarah thinks to herself as she watches her royal herald wade and dart in the crowd to find its center. After a few moments the boy that had followed the herald, beats his drum. The crowd including the stall-barkers and the children to stop and slowly circle around.

“Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Your most Glorious Queen, Sarah De’Fiona Oryan will be officially opening the Grand Chess Tournament Festival this Friday at nine peels of the evening bell. All ye gather around to watch as the Black King battles the White King once more. Who will win this year? Come and find out!”

Taking a deep breath, “Young and old, rich man and pauper, nobleman and merchant….come for all are welcomed. Come all ye Orcs, Elves, Dwarves and Knaves to the Grand Chess Match! Enjoyment of all awaits ye!”

The boy does another drum roll and follows the herald through the cheering crowd and waits by his side as he tacks up the Chess Match poster on the town square’s board.

Bowing to the crowd, the small drummer boy and herald leave to journey to the next town.

Moving back inside the cool compartments she slips into her maid’s clothing and whispers the magic words, instantly transporting her to the chess board fairgrounds to oversee that everything in order for the morrow.
