Sleep seldom found its' way to Forrest's conscious state. She couldn't remember the last time she had gotten up from her bed, face hidden away behind arms and pillow, refusing to show her face to any stray particle in the air that might sight her. The fireplace's embers had long ago died, leaving only charcoal corpses of the wood they had put to death. What had once been a festive pit turned into a graveyard unattended, without another to urge it to life.
Rolling over, Forrest's full awareness returned to her at once accompanied by sharp pains and an overwhelming weakness from her neglect to truly live.
The egg... Dark, almost black eyes fell to the egg near the fireplace, the reason the fireplace had been built. Sliding off the bed and falling on her side to sit, catching herself with her arms and not even attempting to move gracefully and carefully as she usually did, she scooted closer to the egg.
Running a hand over the now cool surface, she bowed her head shamefully, hair falling away from her left eye. The burn was now barely visible thanks to Telia's magics, but her eye was still lined with violet streaks and it was significantly weaker than her right. She forced both eyes to examine the egg, tracing a finger along the flawed gem-like surface, following the murky swirls of the pea-green dragon egg.
"Why is it that humans and those of human nature are the only ones who lie?" she hissed through gritted teeth, shaking her head. After a moment of gazing at the egg, her scowl slowly faded. "I will not fail you again."
Standing up slowly, almost losing her balance in the process, she clenched her fist. In a grated, angered tone she added onto her list of vows to herself. "I will not be used by humans. I will not be tainted by humanity. I shall do my best to keep humans from spreading their impurities amongst the superior races." With a bitter smile, she looked up to the ceiling and murmured, "I will live to see humanity's fall."
Laughing bitterly to herself, she grabbed a backpack off of the bedpost and rummaged through the contents. Pulling out a scroll, she set it beside her as she rolled a few logs out from under the bed. Arranging them in the fireplace, she muttered, "Vas Flam" as she threw the scroll into the fireplace as well. The fire burst to life, the cold air seeming to be cut by the sudden source of heat.
"I shall not fail you again, Ramoth."
Various shapes played across the egg and Forrest's eyes, cast by the fire as it danced back to life. Forrest cradled the egg in her arms, laying down on the stone floor and finally falling asleep with it held protectively against her chest. _________________ "Forrest, a woman of many words..
