A robed monk arrives at handing him an envelope sealed with red wax and the Yew Abbey seal pressed into it.

Judas,

I wish I were writing you under better circumstances, but I’ve just received some disturbing news. I do not have any further news of Deminatza’s father, but I fear there is a more immediate threat.

I know you have vouched for the man, Scaramandine, but I don’t think he has been quite as honest as he’d have us believe. I’m afraid that he may cause Deminatza harm. I don’t dare to explain exactly what the problem is here in the letter lest it be intercepted. When we first met, I am sure you noticed Scaramandine was far more interested in hurling insults my way. I think he fears that I would learn his true motive and sought to discredit me. He is even against me giving the very tonic that helps Demi. It was at the suggestion of Jolicia and yourself that we focus on finding a solution for her. This gave me hope knowing both you and Jolicia truly care for her well being.

I implore that you use your utmost discretion. Watch him carefully. When I first met the man, he wore no gloves. Now, he ensures that they are donned at all times. I fear the closer they become, the stronger his hold will be. I would like to meet privately with both you and your friend later this evening at the town of Yew, where the healers tend the sick, during the rising of the fifth star in the western sky. Make no mention of our meeting or suspicions to Deminatza. I'm afraid that if you do, she'll pull away from us.

Please give your response to the courier. He is instructed to remain until you dismiss him. I await your reply, and again I request you have care with your words with Scaramandine. We do not want to give him any indication of our suspicion.

Your most humble servant,

Father Balzar
