He sensed them coming, and tried to recall, but the spell merely fizzled. Another part of the curse, he wondered? Accepting the inevitable, he decided to play it from the hip. Kneeling down, he finished making a campfire.
The two figures, both human, a male and a female, approached cautiously, weapons ready. The hailed him from the trees and he responded, inviting them to warm themselves by the fire.
They asked him what he was doing out here (among the frigid wastes of the northeastern Lost Lands). That lie was easy enough. "Hunting," he told them, for walrus hides. They replied they were too... and they sheathed their weapons. A good sign!
Introducing themselves as Judas d'Arc and Jolicia, they began small talk, finally getting around to the real purpose of their search... they were looking for an elf named Typernion.
"Bounty hunters?" he asked. "No," they replied, merely concerned. Jolicia asked him if he ever heard of Typernion.
He chose to play it close. "I know him," he replied. "He is kin." Then he offered to tell him the truth about his "kinsman," how he had been falsely accused, arrested, beaten, and incarcerated for months in solitary confinement.
All went well until they asked him about Thraxas' plans. He used the word, "I" instead of "he" for his "kinsman" Typernion. They caught it, and the jig was up.
"You are Typernion?"
"Yes, I am," he confessed. He showed them proof of his tale by the deep scars and bruises given him by his captors. "Walruses and frost trolls have not made these," he added.
They seemed to sympathize, but were torn on what to do with him. He mentioned his fiancee and her kinship to Duchess Molly. Jolicia knew her and they elected to take him there, but had no means of conveyance via rune stone. After he gave his word he would not try to escape, they took him first to Luna, then to Ashencrosse where he was given a room. The plan was to meet with Molly and Kayla to decide how best to proceed.

"He is in a place I have never seen before, a building of some kind. There are people with him... humans it seems. They appear to treat him kindly," Magda reported. She turned to look at the Regent. "You may assume he has been captured or has found allies."
Thraxas scowled. "I did not expect this. How would anyone decline such a bounty? My plan will stall until I have him again."
"Would you like my opinion?"
Thraxas nodded. "Why not?"
"Assume he is in the company of friends. What does it matter? He is a figurehead for elvish rebellion. As long as he is free, you have a case to make. If it goes to trial, you will have to defend your actions against him publicly, and, if I may add, that will not go so good for you. Besides, unless you have stacked the deck, I think he would be acquitted. After all, there were no witnesses to the murders."
"I did not intend for it to go to trial."
"You would make him a martyr?"
"I had further plans for him before that."
"So far your plans have not fared well. I suggest you simply await developments. Time is on your side, Regent."
Thraxas nodded and stalked away. Enjoy your freedom, elf. Your time is running out. _________________ "If a criminal has what you want, you do business with him." |
