Bree seemed to start coming out of her shell with the Atalan more and more over the past days. She wasn't happy, but she didn't seem as sad. Truthfully, Bree really liked Xianna. She even found Trillin's stories to be very entertaining, even if in her mind, she always pictured him as the villain and she was Thanatos, the hero.
She never saw outside. Never felt the breezes, saw the sun or moon. Not until last night. A slave had come, a man who brought her food and milk and gave her a wash basin to clean herself. He was human. Eventually, with many curious questions, she found out that he was to be her servant. This more than puzzled her. She found out that he had been a father, and had at least a son and a daughter but when she asked of them, he'd run out of her cell in tears. She felt so badly for the man, and it was he that had made up her mind about something she'd been struggling with. Her attempts at getting her dagger back had failed and lately she had begun to wonder if she should try to escape without it. She didn't want to leave it behind. It meant more to her than even her gloves. But this man, this slave, needed help as much as she did. She couldn't be so selfish. She had to at least try to escape and maybe, she could find someone to free the man.
At first Bree thought of her mother but she began to think the Atalan might be a little right about her. It had been sooo long since she was first captured. She'd heard nothing of any attempts made to free her. She even started to doubt that her mother had even told her papa. Though he might not come himself away from the the island and their lodge, he would have at least sent someone to fetch her home if he knew. A house guard maybe. He wouldn't just leave her here. She might be the littlest Armunn, but she was still an Armunn. Trillin told her she could leave if her mother just came to pick her up but that she wouldn't even do that. That had to be an exaggeration...wasn't it? She had been here so long and would have no concept of day or night if it weren't for sounds of activity here and there. She must have been here weeks, maybe even months. Why didn't anyone come get her?
No matter the reason, she had to get out. Even her extreme patience was starting to fail her. She was beginning to feel....defeated.
Trillin came into her cell and spoke with her. She tried to get him to play hide and seek or even checkers, but he wouldn't. He left her cell and she followed him out. When he made no move to stop her, she became happy and tagged along behind him where ever he went. They went outside the prison. The moon was so high and bright in the sky, it nearly blinded her to look at. The breeze felt so crisp and clean. The air filled her lungs with an energy she'd not felt in..well, a long time. She saw they were approaching a building. At first she thought to take off running and hide, but no. She knew Trillin was too quick and too smart to try such an obvious trick. Bree reasoned that where ever he was taking her, she'd eventually have to return to her cell. She would try then..but in a much trickier way. She followed along with him, darting a short distance away from him here and there to look at this or that, getting him use to her movements, but always returning back to him. If she was successful later, she would want one thing from him since she couldn't have her dagger. She wanted a last story. A story of Thanatos the gladiator. One with guts and blood and suspense. He was so good at those types of stories.
Bree found herself on the rooftop of a place that looked like a kitchen with many tables. There was a strange metal thing with whirly tubes and bottles nearby. She stared at it in amazement. She had seen one of those just once before. At aunt Aulbrey's house. The jugs she saw looked good as she thought they must hold fruit juice in them, like Juju's did. Apparently it was not juice. Whatever it was, Trillin told her it was for before fighting.
She convinced a story out of him. He never seemed to mind telling her the stories. Bree tried to lay her head down on his arm to listen, but Trillin had not appreciated that, so she sat up straight, looked at the moon and listened to the further adventures of Thanatos. When he had stopped his story to ask if she were tired, she shook her head no. She wasn't tired. She wanted to hear more....it might be her last chance to ever again hear one of his stories. Later, he stopped again, but this time she felt that if she didn't leave soon she might very well be too tired to try for an escape. It was midnight or a couple of hours past, according to the moon. Darkness would be an advantage she couldn't afford to lose.
The two began to leave the building. Again Bree darted here and there, sometimes giggling. Once outside, she hid, but as he went to turn around, she jumped out of her hiding spot to giggle and run to him. She continued her playful behavior until the prison was close by, as she giggled, her eyes sought a clear route. South east. She would run by him closely, as if she were playing her darting game again. Closer now. They began to turn a corner, Bree darted towards him but this time, instead of coming back around, she kept going as fast as she could until she found a small spot, jumped for it, and hid quickly before he realized she wasn't near like she should be. She didn't wait to watch, but she glimpsed the moment his reaction changed.
She knew she shouldn't run. She should use each shadow, each log, each rock....anything and everything hiding as she moved along, almost painfully slow so as not to make a mistake. Bree changed direction suddenly, going in a straight line was never good in her past hide and seek games. She could hear horse hooves and her pulse quickened, but the sound began to drift away from her not towards. Still she didn't relax. Bree always sneezed when she got nervous. An odd habit, but one that might cost her her freedom, if she didn't stay in control of her every movement. Minutes went by, but it seemed like hours. Looking back, she saw only the very tops of the tallest buildings of Maedas. She was so close to freedom. It only made her nervousness worse to look back, and she sneezed. Covering her mouth and nose quickly, she stood very still and peeked around, almost too frightened of what she might see. But there was no one. No sound of horse hooves. Just birds and the distant call of a...what was that call? Bree peered into the darkness to her left and saw a mansized figure moving as if it floated on air. As it came a bit closer she saw that it was floating! She'd never seen anything like it. It didn't appear solid exactly. At least it wasn't Trillin and the thing didn't seem to notice her, so she hid again and went back to her slow trek across the jungle.
In a short while her foot stepped on strangely soft dirt and from her hiding spot, she saw the largest ant she had ever seen climb out of a hole. It was bigger than she was! Not wanting to give it a chance to find her, she stepped away carefully and continued onward. The air became suddenly colder and there was a wonderfully familiar scent in the air. An ocean! She found the shoreline of the ocean on her left and followed it northward toward she knew not where. More soft dirt. Another ant. A parrot crying out "Paulie" flew close by her and made her duck down. When she turned back from watching the parrot, she saw an angry looking man on horseback ride close by her, but it wasn't Trillin. She thought for a second to call out to him for help but what if he were helping Trillin look for her? She couldn't take the chance so she stayed hidden until he was a safe distance away. The shoreline seemed to go on and on. The air was very cold now and her feet suddenly crunched onto snow. The noise made her wince and stop to look around her. She was getting nervous now, and the cold only seemed to make it worse. The loud crunching snow steps, the biting cold air. She didn't hear the horse' approach. Trillin. He rode by her at first, not seeing her. She should stay still and quiet but she panicked instead and turned too sharply to run ...she ran too quickly, but not quickly enough. Her panicked movements had gotten his attention and he was on her in a moment's breath. She tried again to hide but failed. There was a bright flash of light and an overwhelming heat before she passed out, unconscious. _________________ = Bree Armunn =
