Bree sat on the dirt floor, her knees pulled tight up against her chest. With a gloved finger, she wiped a stray tear from her cheek and looked out the bars of her cell. A wall across the way was about the only thing she could see, but shadows of movement had ceased to play against it. All had gone quiet and she was glad for it.
These people in red were very different than anyone she'd met so far. The man in red, the one she ran away from had tackled her to the ground before there was was pain and all went black. She awoke in the cell, and a woman, dressed the same as the one that'd chased, her kicked her hard. Bree had acted afraid before that. The kick to her side had set something off within her and brought a strange anger and stubborness she'd not felt before. If she had her dagger, she would've tried gutting the female, but it wasn't there. They'd taken all but her clothes and her aud'char. That damnable instrument. She hated the thing, but her mother wanted her to learn just one song so that Bree would have a new experience. Wiping her bloody mouth, she couldn't help but laugh. She was having a 'new experience' now. Her soft laugh threatened to turn into tears. She really wasn't that afraid of her current predicament oddly enough. She was more afraid of her father finding out what she had done and ending up like this. Her mother had told her earlier today, "Sometimes bad things happen if you don't listen to your parents."
And Bree hadn't listened. Hadn't listened when she was told not to sneak out because it was dangerous. Not to use runebooks without asking.....but, Bree didn't really think she'd get in trouble. She didn't really think at all on what she was doing. She just wanted to explore. And maybe just a little part of her wanted to see how much she could get away with before making her mother, her nuna, angry enough to punish her.
Bree had managed to get away briefly from what she suspected were the Red People both her parents warned her about, but the kick to her side had her in so much pain it slowed her normal stealthy movements, making her stumble over a rock. The woman in red had caught up to her easily enough and marched her back into the prison. But at least her little escapade had hushed the earlier conversation of a page the woman demaded she sign while she shoved it in Bree's face. But, stubbornly and as politely as her temper would let her, Bree had said No. She thought it odd that before she left, her father, Lord Armunn, had given her explicit instructions to sign nothing while she was in Sosaria. And then too, her mother, rambled the same thing inbetween a story of a butterfly and questions about her sister, Imryrr. She thought it odd, but when she stared, near cross-eyed at the paper in her face, it began to make some kind of sense at least....some. Paper signing didn't seem all that threatening in itself, but given that her parents had been right about other things, she thought it best to take their advice to heart. She was in enough trouble as it was. Bree didn't know what these people would do next. These red people with their strange clothes and strange ways and talk of feeding her to a root. What was that suppose to mean anyway? Were they going to kill her and bury her under a tree with roots? She bit her lip. Death was a very real possibility. She wondered what death was like. Some believed in afterlives. Her sister spoke of an honorable and glorious death. Would this be an honorable death? She banged her head softly on her knee once to stop this strange line of thoughts, but a sharp pain made her instinctively reach up to her temple where the man had hit her to knock her out.
She just wanted to go home. Go back to the island. Back to the hunting lodge and her papa. But how? No one even knew she was missing. Everyone was asleep when she had snuck out and it wouldn't be morning for a few more hours. Even then, they wouldn't know where to look. They might never find her. But, if by some chance her mother came, what could she possibly do? Her mother might even be put in a cell herself and it would be all Bree's fault. She was torn between wanting to be found and not wanting to.
If only they would open the cell door just one more time. That might be all she would need with her shortness and stealth to aid her in rushing by them again. Might be all she would need to get away.... _________________ Dark Lady Ditto Armunn

Ditto's tavern excursion had been most entertaining for her. She had almost tossed all the barrels of Melnibone wine out into the sea when the idea came to her to have a bit of Chaotic fun and share her prize with everyone. The gift of the wine had flowed generously in Aulbrey's Lush House. If anyone developed a ...need for the stuff, all the better for her mission.
Mentioning her daughter, Bree to Cat, had been like a splash of cold water in her face. She'd found a note from Bree that morning saying she was spending the night with Cat and Lady Genna. This seemed to be news to Cat though. Ditto became worried and frustrated. Her friend was also being affected by the melnibone' wine. Giving people flowers, speaking of peace, screaming out a song for peace. With much poking and prodding, Ditto finally was able to manage some information out of Cat. Now she found out that her daughter had not only lied about her where abouts but also had snuck out a full day ago, and with a bottle of Aulbrey's normal wine. Conversing with Juju, she made the discovery that Bree had used her runebook. There weren't that many places she could be from this particular book. Most of the places runed, were of chicken hang outs in barn yards and such, the only real rune that might hold any interest to her daughter was the one that led to Maedas. Maedas, home of the ones she called the Red People, the Atalan. Human hating, enslaving, manipulators geared for combat. That was certainly no good place for a young girl to be. Ditto herself, was always wary of constant danger on their lands. Especially if Trillin, with his hot temper, were prowling about.
At first she thought to ask her Orc family to join her on her search, but, she didn't want it to make the Red People more onguard or blood thirsty than what might best be handled by just going and asking of her daughter as a friend, so Ditto departed the tavern. If Bree was actually in Maedas, she'd know that she wouldn't need to punish her for her actions....what she feared was worse than any punishment Ditto could give.
A little while later, Ditto arrived at the Atalan keep and knocked repeatedly at the door. Suddenly there was movement beside her and when she turned, there was Trillin. And then another came. She wouldn't be able to reason with Trillin, especially around another of his kind. This knowledge and her own inner temper caused by worry, gave her much frustration. Ditto felt defeated before she even opened her mouth. She needed now to be as calm as she could manage for this to have any chance at all to work. If anything of an agreement was offered, they wouldn't be asking for what most might, and she needed to be prepared for that. She needed to be prepared to leave without her daughter. She just hoped he wouldn't ask.
But ask he did, or demanded rather. Trillin offered to exchange her and her signature for Bree's release. Ditto's heart sank. She knew she couldn't do it as much as her mother's heart screamed at her to. She held deep within her all of Tarothin's secrets. His strengths, his weaknesses, his..destruction. To control or destroy her husband would bring down her entire family. Both daughters, any chance of hope for Daerauko, and her extended family would be effected as well. Though melnibone's were not known to be susceptible to mind control, she had no idea what type of enchantments, these Atalan were capable of, or how their contract was made. She couldn't take the chance. Calling upon that tiniest part of her soul that held Order, her husband's order...the family honor....she steeled herself, and became all of an Armunn wife and mother, and all that it demanded. She was focused on her duty to her husband, to House Armunn itself. "I will not risk the entire Armunn House for but one of us." There would be no bending on that point. She offered him her death for her daughter's release, but she would not offer herself, her signature. She would not betray Tarothin, not even for her daughter's life.
They were at a stalemate, she and Trillin. If she could speak with Asimov, it was still another chance, though slim, she might still be able to get Bree out of their clutches. If that failed, she had two more options available to her. One involved bloodshed, perhaps aiding the greater mission; the other involved peace, a peace that would ruin all that she'd strived to obtain for Tarothin and Isk and their goals.

Bree sat on the ground in the tiny cell, shivering with the cold. Except for her undergarments and a strange choke collar, she was bare. Trillin had tried to force her to wear a robe. She hadn't cooperated and threw the thing off every chance she got. Throwing dirt in his face, spitting at him....until he finally resorted to the collar that he could grab and hurt her throat with. He had told her that if she were going to act like an animal she'd be treated like one. She only said quietly and proudly that she was a beast's daughter. Bree always spoke quietly, whether she was afraid or angry, and she was both....constantly. But she was vicious and stubborn too. She tried hard not to think of some of the things Trillin had said to her. The many many things. She was young but not stupid. He was her captor. There was no reason to believe him when he beat her constantly. Even now her little body was bloody and severly bruised after several struggles with him. Still though, some of the things he'd said had hurt worse than anything physical he'd done to her. Her mother knew she was there but left her there, he'd said. Her father hid himself away because he was a coward. Neither of them must love her, to leave her here like this, he'd said. She knew none of it was true, but it still hurt. Trillin said her mother could've gotten her out of there easily if she had just exchanged herself, but she cared more for herself than Bree. No one wanted her...no one but the Atalan. They'd love her and raise her up as one of them, he'd told her. Bree had turned her young face to his, but instead of innocence and youthful naivety, her eyes sparkled with determination, yet again she spoke quietly, "You can treat me how you wish. I will not cooperate. And in the end, will always be Armunn." _________________ = Bree Armunn =
