Ireland Forever
Beautiful Ireland, my ancestral land
Where spirits thrive beneath the sand
And every island has a name and story
Regaling ancient Celtic glory
Bishop Patrick, Rome's beloved saint
Came to banish perceived taint
And all the Celt's beloved gods then
Ran to live 'neath hill and fen
As March seventeenth again draws nigh
I am reminded that magic does not die
Lugh Lamhfada, The Shining One,
Took on the name of "leperchaun"
Once warrior god of arts and crafts
And honored on ancient artifacts
Despite Patrick's deeds he shares
Publicity adorning our festive wares
Both are held in great esteem
While decked in brilliant emerald green
I will remember the ancient fey

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
I realize I posted my poem days early, but that is when I started to observe personally. I'm sure most are familiar with St. Patrick, but there's another guy who is plastered all over this day. Lugh Lamhfada. One of the gods of old Celtic pantheon, fled to hide in the hills when the new religions spread in Ireland.
Of the greatest of the gods, the victor of the battle on the Plain of Towers, Lugh Lamhfada, god of all knowledge, patron of the arts and crafts, his name is still known today. But as memory of the mighty warrior, the invincible god, has faded, he is known only as Lugh-chromain, little stooping Lugh of the sidhe, relegated to the role of a fairy craftsman. And, as even the language in which he was venerated has disappeared, all that is left of the supreme god of the Children of Danu is the distorted form of that name Lugh-chromain... leprechaun."

Lyrics (in Irish Gaelic): English translation:
Siúlaigí a chairde, siúlaidh liom
Mar cheo an tsléibhe uaine ag
imeacht go deo
D'ainneoin ár dtuirse leanfam an tslí
Thar chnoic is thar ghleannta
go deireadh na scríbi
Seo libh a chairde is canaidh liom
Líonaigí'n oíche le greann is le spórt
Seo sláinte na gcarad atá imithe uainn
Mar cheo an tsléibhe uaine,
iad imithe go deo
Wander my friends, wander with me
Like the mist on the green mountain, moving eternally
Despite our weariness
we'll follow the road
Over hill and and valleys
to the end of the journey
Come on my friends and sing with me
Fill the night with joy and sport
Here's a toast to the friends who have gone from us
Like the mist of the green mountain,
gone forever
