Exodus?:
He returned from an exhaustive patrol in the noon hours. Arieus, recently have discussed many things with Arcana, and having waited for oh so long it seemed that several of his life's goals where finally at hand.
However, despite his joy, there lingered a cloud of doubt, which slowly settled into frustration. For a path he saw as once clear, was now strewn with boulders and the debris of other peoples wanting and desires, a feeling of second best, and many years of waiting. Arieus had found he had grown bitter, spiteful.
The days of truth, honor, nobility and loyalty seemed to have vanished in the realm. He found himself a drift on a sea of rumor, speculation, and doubt.. Nobody cared about the sincerity of virtue anymore and nobody cared about true chivalry. Fabric which had bound him with society was now ripped and shredded. Would it ever mend? Would the warrior Arieus ever be seen as anything other than a walking tin can? Would he ever be able to keep tip toeing on the eggshells that had now been strewn along his trail of life?
The truth was, he probably could handle all these things, but only with the promise of unconditional love, which, ironically, held conditions. What if he should die in battle, leaving battered friendships the only thing for Arcana to fall back on?
Sacrifice was one of Arieus’s favorite shrines, and there did he meditate on his long shattered heart. He though of his love for Arcana, which could and would never end. However, he was only human, and knowing well enough the dangers involved with mortality, he couldn’t very well disappoint her. The warrior Arieus felt like he wouldn’t, and this was his outward expression. His true soul would know only love for her.
He could still, not be sure that she felt the same.
Scout reports of a recent caravan from Vesper to Umbra had reached him, and he had pondered several of the rumors in the realm in regard to the status of this mercenary, whom now was reported to have changed his ways. Arieus could not relate in the slightest, for he had always been true to himself and to others.
He felt that what Arcana did was not for her own happiness, but for his. This made a condition for love. He would not allow it. How many more times would an annoyance, if not this mercenary, or some other fool come for Arcana’s attention? He was tired of fighting in the realm for her attention. He was now lost, The Book of Destiny still crying in his being, the possible formation of a united alliance, perhaps gone, his love beaten an battered for years.
Arieus had a spine, one of pure steel…..how dare that be questioned. His loyalty to his liege was beyond question. He'd always strove to keep true to his loyalties and oaths, no matter the personal cost, one of the hardest things to do in life. What was he without these principles? So much of his life would have been far easier and simpler without keeping to them.
Little did everyone know, but Arieus’s feeling had been trampled upon longer than most and in more ways than one. His love, shunned. His sword wielded for naught in the end. His bravery and honor unrecognized. He was jaded now. And for Arieus, jaded was not an option.
Arieus set out to quell one of the upstart dragons in a cave close to one of his friends’ homes. It was not long before the veteran warrior happened to find the monster.
Arieus rode in at full gallop, straight into the breath of fire, the razor-sharp claws, and the spear like teeth of the enormous ancient wyrm.
..A furious battle then ensued, and the outcome would not be determined soon. _________________
