“Daughter,” the word resonated in Jolicia’s soul. She had never been called that before and the last time she even felt close to being someone’s daughter was before Baeleron passed. The feeling of having a family again was almost overwhelming but for now she did not truly show it. She simply beamed whenever she had the chance to please this woman with her actions. As if this wasn’t enough, she was also free to go to her own home now. There were rules to be followed, however, and the woman made sure Jolicia was reminded of them with the simple caveat that she would always be watched. As their evening ended, they embraced and went their separate ways.
Jolicia appeared in front of her home and looked around the valley, the brilliant white of the snow as the moon shined on it and the contrasting colors of the mountains. She let out a sigh of content as she slowly walked up the front steps. It was there that Jolicia paused; listening, smelling the air, but it appeared as if everyone was still asleep. Creeping into the house she went up the next set of stairs to her chambers. Looking around the room, Jolicia was pleased with the work Alana had done while she was away. Sitting down at her desk she pulled out two pieces of parchment; making a quick list of items on one piece. She began writing a note on the second:
Alana,
I have returned home. I’m pleased with what I have seen so far and will make a point of looking at the rest of the house later. Enclosed is a list of items that Jezabel needs to make for me today. Give it to her as soon as she wakes so that she may get started.
I will need you to make sure no one disturbs me today. No visitors, no questions, no exceptions. I will come find you once I have awoken to discuss some things.
~Jolicia~
P.S. We have a family again. I will explain later.
She neatly folds up the letter and list and steps out into the hallway. Quietly walking up to Alana’s door, she slips the note underneath. Gently placing her hand on the door, she paused. She then shook her head as if to snap herself out of a daze. Slipping back into her chambers, she settles in for some much needed rest. |
