|
Standing on the edge of a field, watching the golden heads of wheat dance in the chilled autumnal gusts he inhaled deeply the honey rich fragrance of the harvest. The trees beyond the fields almost aflame with reds, golds, browns chattering in the breeze, their dry dead leaves littering the ground and skittering like rodents.
Everything he drank in like rich mead, for who was to say how long he'd have this time around the circle?
The trips between the valley and the safe haven were bittersweet...both ends contained his heart and in the middle, nothing but vast expanses of field and forest with nothing to keep him company but the rhythm of his steps and the ebb and flow of his thoughts.
And always, always there was the fire...
In the center of his mind were the neverending embers of the past. It was the key to remembering, he had to keep the embers glowing. Every now and again, something would feed them like the throwing on of giant logs and the flames would burst to life, illuminating more and more of the things he so desperately needed to know. He longed for those logs as a man longs for water in the drought, sought them in every encounter and every conversation.
It was the book that seemed to hold the most promise.
Digging in a box within his bank holdings, he found a very dog-eared and rather charred red leather book. Inside in his own handwriting was a treasure beyond any he could have hoped for...his own journaling. He had read it in one sitting, mystified at what the entries eluded to in their vague subjects.
"What's a lifetime anyway?"
This one line, alone on a page, stuck out to him the most. It rolled around in his head like a bola ball. Now, standing alone in this field, it was picking up momentum and he felt like he almost had it, almost knew what it meant...and in a flash, it caught, the supple wood of the words bursting into bright and blinding flame and he knew he knew!!
He couldn't contain himself as a hurricane of thoughts filled his head and overwhelmed him. Closing his eyes, he let the wave of flame consume him and just wallowed in the memories of days gone past for a moment.
Opening his eyes, he looked around at the charred remnants of the field around him, the smoke from the scorched woods filling the air densely like a flock of crows. He laughed loudly and beat as hasty retreat back onto the path...his mind a fury of the secrets the embers now told. _________________ "Eddie Castle, King of the Coconuts!" |
