“You’re sure you want to do this?” River’s blue eyes leveled squarely on her sister.
“I am.”
“There will be those who try to abuse it, Kylee.” Concern seeped out of every word laying heavy in the air between them.
“I’ll be all right, River.”
Leaving her hands on her sister’s shoulder a moment longer as if to reinforce the doubts in her mind, River inhaled lightly before letting them fall. Kylee caught them gently and took hold of the long slim fingers. Windswept and caught among the breeze she whispered, “It will be okay. You’ll see.”
“You know where home is. Promise me you won’t forget?”
“I promise.” Resigned to the knowledge that she wasn’t going to change her mind, River turned and headed for the thatched door of the cottage. Looking back only once, she sighed once more as the expectant gaze in Kylee’s black eyes urged her exit.
As the door closed so ended the extra outcomes River had tried to express. Kylee would hear none of them. Beyond that door beckoned a world she had only read about. A world she had only seen through the eyes of her siblings when the candles were low and the crescent moon hung alert above in the midnight sky. To live was to experience the ice cold water on your torso or feel the fire as it slid along your skin. To live meant she had to do it all herself.
Starting now. |
