|
Back in her room at the Ironwood Inn, Cezanne delighted in the feel of crisp new parchment, and the crinkle of brown paper as she unwrapped her new quill. She opened the new inkwell and tilted her head thoughtfully, then began to write…
Lord Dealthagar,
It has been far too long since last we spoke. I was ever-so pleased to see you in attendance at the last social event held at the Bramble Rose Theatre, but I lament that we did not have more time to speak in earnest.
There is a matter of great import and urgency that I would like the opportunity to discuss with you, if you have time in the near future. Lord Arahim and I sail tomorrow to Nujel’m, and will be staying there a short while before moving on. If you could see your way clear to give audience, I would very much like the opportunity to speak with you.
I apologize for giving such short notice, but I find myself in short supply of time, at present. Thank you, Sir, for your consideration, and I shall await your reply.
Most Sincerely,
Cezanne Abella
Carefully, she rolled the parchment and tied it with a length of crimson ribbon, then affixed it to the leg of a seagull and released the creature from the window of her room. “Fly swiftly, Friend. There are a great many who depend upon you…” |

Receiving the sea bird, Ceinwyn read the letter over once before leaving it on her husband's desk.
It's been a long time since I've seen that little one, I wonder if she ever found her atonement...
As an afterthought, she left a note for her fiery-haired tinker:
Chev,
If you cannot meet with Cezanne, I will do so in your stead. As it happens, I wouldn't mind accompanying you for this "urgent" meeting. It has been years since I have seen my wayward girl.
Love Eternal,
Cein
P.S. Please be sure to tell the cooks not to serve pot roast tonight, please. It was not prepared properly last time. Also, I left some of those little candied nuts you like in the dish beside this letter. |

Dealthagar looked over the letters. He munched on a handful of the nuts, rereading the delicate handwriting of his wife. It was good to see her human appetites were returning. It meant the treatments were working. "Sularis!"
The technomancer's major-domo stepped from the alcove he haunted when Dealthagar worked in his office. "What is thy bidding, my master?"
"Tell the cooks if they make that pot roast again, they'll be working in the galley of one of the fleet garbage scows."
"Does my master have a preference?"
"Meat that isn't boiled. Hind flank steaks. And a cheesecake for dessert."
"I will see to it personally." Sularis retreated into the shadows and disappeared.
Dealthagar dabbed his quill in the deep violet ink on his desk and crafted a reply.
Cezanne,
It was a large event, and you were there as the host. Think nothing of it. I was glad to participate.
As Lord Governor of Nujel'm, it is my duty to make myself available to the peoples of Sosaria in times of need. You are quite welcome in Nujel'm and my wife and I would be glad to meet with you and discuss your urgent issue.
No apology is needed. Life is an urgent thing, and every moment is precious. I am more than happy to meet with you whenever you have need.
In deepest regards,
Dealthagar
Lord Governor of Nujel'm
He rolled the letter and sealed with the sigil of the 7 Toothed Gear before attaching it to the leg of one of his orthons. "to the Bramble Rose. Off with you." The mechanical raven stretched it's wings and flit out of the window. _________________
