“I thought perhaps crimson? For th’ joust accents I mean.” Aurelia folded a scrap of crimson satin and held it on the diagonal across Eclyse’s chest.

Eclyse looked down at the makeshift sash and nodded. “S’perfect. An’ for th’ armour? We goin’ to look unified I hope?”

“Oh, aye. Ayana’s workin’ on the armour already.” She noted the apprehensive expression in Eclyse’s eyes and added hastily. “Don’t worry, no white. Promise.”

Eclyse nodded and reached up, her hand seeming to seek of its own accord the silver and ruby pendant that hung delicately at her throat. Aurelia watched Eclyse’s vivid green eyes as they unfocused, and the girl’s thoughts wandered elsewhere. She’d known Eclyse since they were children, and she knew without a doubt where her mind was now.

“Clysie, I was thinkin’. Ye think it’s proper for a Countess to knight someone?” Aurelia watched Eclyse as she changed the subject, and Eclyse rejoined the here and now.

“O’course.” Eclyse smiled. “These are your lands. Their people, your citizens. Who were ye thinkin’ to knight?”

Aurelia straightened the pile of cloth in her lap. “Corvus. He’s been nothin’ but loyal. If anyone ‘ere deserves it, he does.”

Eclyse’s eyes went wide for a moment. “But he was a gypsy…”

“We were all somethin’, once.” Aurelia lifted her gaze to Eclyse’s. “An’ you shouldn’t be the only knight in Ashencrosse.”

Eclyse’s expression fell, but she nodded thoughtfully. “He’s been nothin’ if not faithful an’ dedicated. But make th’ decision on yer own judgement. Bein’ alone never really bothered me.”

“You’re not alone.” Aurelia moved next to Eclyse and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, giving a reassuring squeeze. “But if I’m to do this, I’ll need yer help, ‘Clysie. You’re the one who knows how this all goes. I can’t do it by m’self.”
