“Look she has a tail” “What are you?” “I could remove that tail for you, if you like” “I’m not really into fur” “Where do you live?” “Do you have a mate?”
Voices rattled around in her head.

Cat sat in her chair in front of the fire. The light from the dying embers makes her eyes glow gold, her ears picking up the flame’s hiss and the drip of resin from the wood.

Suspicions formed in her mind as the voices grew louder. To pretend all is well, pretend she is safe, would be unwise.
It had been years since the last encounter with her pirate father. He had fought to reclaim his hold on the daughter he despised. He had brought his pirate crew to her doorstep only to be pushed back to the sea. “At a high price” she thought aloud, letting her mind picture the face of Angus, as his life slipped from him at the pirate’s hands. She hadn’t seen any clue of her father or the band of men he commanded but felt a presence, an underlying current of treachery.

Maybe she was being paranoid. She shook her head as the claw she had been biting slipped from her mouth. Sighing loudly and speaking to the hissing fire, “It’s better to be paranoid then to be once again locked in the hold of his ship, a slave. I have to be more careful”

She rose from the chair to look out into the night. The darkness didn’t frighten her, she could see quite clearly. The daylight however, would bring more suspicions along with new acquaintances.

“Watch your back lass” She heard Angus’ voice say on the wind.
