A steady rain had been falling for well over two hours. Mikhaeil halted, sheltering beneath the spreading branches of a large yew. He rested his head against the rough bark trunk and allowed time its passage in disquieted solitude. It was rare that he found himself mired in such melancholy. Having come upon him with unexpected swiftness, he'd sought to shed its weight by taking leave of the ludus to run for a time. Then the skies had given way above his head, lightning loosed in savage arcs across the clouds, forcing him to stop . . . forcing his thoughts back to focus.
He shook his head gently, rain soaked tendrils clinging to his temples. Reaching a hand into his pocket he withdrew the small bottle given him by Agostino. The gypsy's plea that his initial test of its contents be in Xoriah's company fell away with determined forebearance as he removed the cork and plied a fingertip into the liquid invitation of escape. |
