The winter was biting at the Paladin woman's toes. Beneath several furs, the cold reached out it's frozen hand to stroke the lady's cheek. LaBelle awoke once more to the chill and her breath on the air. The snow had fallen heavily this season, and the Paladin woman was neither prepared nor pleased with the bitter cold and frozen rain. Over her stockings, she slipped into the damp boots and donned her heaviest robe and cloak. Stepping out of her modest home, she began the trek west into Britain.
Not another soul ventured along the walk. The mother city opened before her, and to her gratification the streets had already been cleared of powdery slush. She arrived to the mint, the frigid air having reddened her nose and cheeks. “My Lady!” exclaimed the money handler she knew all too well, “Do come and warm yourself by the fire.” LaBelle gratefully moved to the far corner of the mint where a large fire had been stoked. Outstretching her hands to the warmth, she bowed her head to the woman and smiled. “Much obliged Akela.” Moving to the Paladin woman's side, the minter inquired, “What brings My Lady to town on such a winter day?” LaBelle pressed her hands together in an effort to capture the heat of the fire within them, and replied, “A hot meal and a friendly face.” The two woman smiled at one another, and faced the flames. “It is a harsh and long winter indeed.” Commented the Paladin woman. Akela nodded and moved towards the long table of large chests, “Shall I fetch my Lady's bank chest?” LaBelle shook her head, and lifted her hands to her face; the warmth moving from them into her cheeks. “Nay good lady, I thank you for the heat of your fire, perhaps I shall find a hot bowel of broth at the Salty Dog.” LaBelle smiled once more to the money handler, and bowed her head. Wrapping her cloak tightly around her once more, she stepped out into the street. Akela stood in the door frame and smiled after the Paladin woman, “Stay warm My Lady!” she called.
And the gentlewoman turned the corner towards the tavern where the smells of cooking food bled into the streets. |
