Iridescent light shimmered along the deep blue ripples. Her forearms on the rails, Meegan inhaled the crisp night air. Not quite midnight, wood carved from Ter Mur drifted upon the seas just east of Jhelom. Though this particular part of the world was infested with pirates Meegan saw only the waves. Quietly she closed her eyes letting the night envelope her. Her first time back on her own vessel in over a month it was time they got reacquainted. She had given the studious little blacksmith her ship back. Having weathered the tongue lashing that had ensued following her arrival and the assurance that once again Joanna would hear about it, Meegan had rolled her eyes and made her way to Freedom's Willcall.
It had been over a month since she and her lady had been united. To some that may have sounded strange, but the dark brown and red was both her roots and her wings. Quietly she turned her wrist then to let her deep red nails graze the ships side. A slow stroke, she didn't have to say anything. Answered with a rocking motion on the port side she kept her eyes closed and snuggled deeper into night's embrace.
The darkness didn't last much longer. The bright blue neon glow of her Fiance' lit up the deck, illuminating the waves for a good 5 clicks in either direction.
“With you I will never need a torch again.”
“Don't hate just because you know my hair is prettier than yours.” Chron grinned boldly at her as he stepped to her side. Placing his arm around her waist he too leaned lightly on the rail. “Your choice of night fishing locations should really be discussed.”
“And miss the chance to see fireworks?” Meegan cracked a smile. If it was one thing that could be said, it was that she knew where to find trouble.
“Has it occurred to you, Love, that while the show may be grand the result would be you stuck on a bouy in the middle of the ocean?”
“I know you would find me before that happened.”
“My timing is impeccable.” The words may have been laced with his ego, but they were true nonetheless. |

As they stood side by side in the night, Meegan looked up at Chron and let her hand brush through his hair gingerly. He looked at her with a smile that revealed the inner warmth to him that precious few got to see.
“Why do you make it glow?” She asked him.. He looked at her, his eyes betraying painful memories relived for only the briefest instant before being replaced by a mask of quiet rage.
“It seems its past time for me to tell you the tale of how it got this way, love.. However, it is a long one.” he replied, as his eyes scanned her face.
Meegan was so attuned to the sounds of the sea that any noise that was out of place sounded clearly in her head. Chron registered the look of alarm and he caught onto it immediately.
A short while later, words of power were whispered into the wind, seeming like they came from nowhere and everywhere all at once.
The glow emanating from Chron’s frosty mane diminished, as fog started rising from the ocean surface in a large area surrounding the boat.
Meegan’s keen hearing caught the direction of the pursuing ship from a few grumbled curses, and immediately took over the steering of her beloved ship.
They were so used to fighting as a team that no words were necessary, and Chron moved to position himself more strategically to combat the tailing pirates.
Her maneuvering left the ship creaking from the strain, as a flash followed by a loud explosion broke the quiet of the night.
“Come on girl, we can do this” Meegan whispered, when a cannonball surrounded by furious flame whipped through the air.
As soon as Chron caught the flash through the fog, he reached deep inside himself, chanting words of power, “Kal Des Ylem” and infused them with the core of cold held within that had been both a blessing and a curse.
The concentration of energy made his hair flare once more, as he spread his arms and focused on the target.
Jagged hail stones the size of a closed fist began pouring down over the area, and each impact of cold, hard ice with wood resounded loudly in the night, mixed with the sound of sails tearing and men groaning in pain.
From the ship wheel, Meegan too drew upon the magic of Mysticism, to summon winds of fury and sent them screeching toward the pirates, hoping to send the remaining pirates running for cover.
Chron moved to stand by Meegan at the helm of the ship and smiled grimly at her..
“We should count ourselves lucky that this crew did not bring a wizard. Their mistake, one they won’t likely repeat. These waters are far too dangerous for you to navigate by yourself. We got off easy this time, they will not be able to pursue without repairs.”
“Well in that case you better stick around, where there’s fish to be caught, not even all of the pirates of the Jhelom waters will keep me away.” she responded with her usual nonchalance and beamed a smile at him that truly made his heart melt.
He moved in close, his body hugging hers as their lips engaged in a passionate kiss, the quiet of the night soon surrounding them, only broken by the shimmering glow of his hair. _________________ Some people think before they speak.
