It was only one trunk. The Lady followed on the heels of the stripling as he carried the parchment filled trunk to the room on the second floor. Her own arms held a large sack of finely tailored garments by the the Lady Prower. “Where would you like me to place this trunk?” The handsome young man inquired. Glancing the room for the first time, LaBelle indicated with a nod to a small area beside the single sleeping pallet, “If you please, there.” The adolescent heaved the trunk, and slid it with much noise against the wall. “Anything else My Lady?” he questioned. LaBelle set her large sack near a provided armoier, and turned slowly to survey her temporary living quarters. “Aye. It would please this Lady to have a writing desk and chair...” pointing with a lissome finger towards a window overlooking the street below, “ There will suit me well.” She moved toward the stripling, reaching into a fold in her robes for several gold pieces. Having received his compensation he bowed his head and leapt down the flight of stairs.
Alone in the house now, LaBelle noticed a set of double doors across the bedroom. They were wedged tightly shut, and made the sound one recognized of having not been opened in some time. A small gallery the length of the house welcomed her. Leaving them open she returned indoors and knelt in front of the chest. It's hinges were worn and there was nothing silent about lifting its top. She gazed upon a stack of parchments entitled, “ Catechetical Lectures”, several books, and a quill and ink of some age.
With no reply from the city of Winterbreeze, the Lady had departed for the mother city. It was always her favored place to stay, often her visits lasted most of the year. North East Britain was quiet, it had it's own mint and provisional shops. The library's were not lengthy walks, and the locals always welcomed her. Procuring the small two story edifice on East Bayside Road was not difficult, nor costly to the Lady. The Lord was pleased to have a renter, and inquired little as to how long she might stay.
As she stood, she felt the familiar rumble in her abdomen. “Perhaps something to eat before I settle in.” She spoke softly to herself, before draping a cloak around her shoulders and descending the stairwell. |
