The bat had hung there for days, moving only to ruffle its body fur or sniff at the smell of the only other occupant of the room... a much disheveled and battered drow. Esric Tal, much the worse for wear, was on his knees, chained to a wall, with his bloodied face facing it. Yet he could hear the twittering of the bat and was able to turn his head to see it.
Being drow, he was quite familiar with such creatures. The upper levels of caves leading to the Underdark were quite full of them. They were harmless enough, and useful to the drow as emergency couriers. Esric had not forgotten his childhood training in their use. With great effort, he applied his mental skills toward the creature, seeking to establish a mental bond with it.
Vhaerun, hear me. Send this one to the Patriarch. Let me not become one of the undead he prayed.
Then he focused intently and visualized the bat in his mind. Seek my Master. My true one. Find him and show him what you see and what you will see as you fly into the darkness. Show him the way to me. If you hear me, go now and do my bidding. I shall remember it and not be ungrateful.
Initially the animal made no move, but soon it stretched its wings and fluttered off, circling the room looking for an exit. Flying between the bars of the cell, it exited the building via an open slit window into the darkness of the night beyond... _________________ "If a criminal has what you want, you do business with him." |

Drayden was walking atop his home in Buc's Den when the messenger flew to him. It relayed it's journey and message to The Patriarch. The drow touched a crystal on a stand, "Mr. Narshan, inform Father that he has work to do. I will detail his orders."
The old human responded instantly, faithful as always, "As you command my lord." Drayden made his way down to his office and sat at his desk to pen the missive to his Shade, Alaundril. Detailing the information obtained by this messenger and the wayward Drow known as Esric. A liability for sure....this one would need to be retrieved and disposed of. |
