Condensation rose in the basement. Polar opposites in the strictest of senses, the walls to the little corner house were the front lines to a weather phenomenon.
One hand on the forge and the other gripping a pair of blackened tongs, she remained arched over the heated center.
Her dress discarded long ago in favor of a sleeveless top, sweat rained from her brow. Each drop eliciting a hiss and billow of steam into the enclosed air space.
Work had fallen by the wayside when Cassidy was born. And now, almost 7 months later the familiar weight of steel between her fingers and the coal dust infiltrating her lungs returned.
A simple request from the Oracle, who could yank her future at any given moment. "Grandmaster grade weapons for the brawl at the tavern."
A much more difficult ridgepole to walk.
Moving forward. |

The spell was new. She's always been able to hit the book, feel the surge and appear in a distant place. Those were charges that Zoe had supplied her before. Now it was her own power and her own steam that transported she and Cassidy where they needed to go. Tiny arms grazed by strawberry blond curls held tightly to Soren's neck while chubby little thighs gripped the upper part of her midsection.
A smile lit up her daughter's flushed cheeks as Umbra appeared. It amazed Soren that such a dark place could create such a happy feeling in the little girl. It was if she knew that at one time, this was home.
That was a long time ago though, Soren thought. And the miles between the two era's seemed to stretch far into the horizon. Regardless, the tailor shop here had always been her favorite. And if she was going to go back to doing what she knew best, it would be with the shop she knew best as well.
One arm wrapped tightly around Cassidy's back and the other supporting her rump she made her way past the bank and into the weaver's building.
Small talk. They would ask questions and she would dodge. She expected this much. It had been a long time since they had seen her. Having Cassidy made it easier as the two ladies were quickly distracted by light hearted giggles and grubby hands reaching for the folds of cloth. Quietly Soren and Cassidy bid farewell and headed back to Stonegate.
It was an errand Soren used to make all the time. But this wasn't then and the heavy air of Umbra sunk its way into her soul as she opened the runebook to recall out. Shadow stones beneath their feet quickly became the shadows of memories slinking themselves into her subconcious. And there, just beyond the walls of the tailor shop the floodgates opened. Grabbing tightly to Cassidy she ran like hell. But it wasn't someone chasing them. She was running from herself. |
