So! Looking for some opinions here. I'm thinking of switching my internet from 10mbs High Speed to 5mbs High Speed.
The reasons are besides the point. I'm just wondering what speed everyone else runs at and how they find it? I know 5 mbs is fine for doing "regular" internet stuff. But I don't want to lag to all hell and back when I'm runnin around Sosaria. _________________ Brianha ‎(10:04 PM):

You shouldn't notice any significant reduction inflation in ping time. If you torrent or download frequently, your kbps may take a hit. _________________ Dryzzid#5091 | 74503058 |

UO will never use all of your bandwith, Latency is more of an issue than bandwith.
I have 3Meg down while hosting stuffs and never had a problem. Just depends you may get more/less latency depending on your ISP, their routes and your location vs server location.

My download speed is capped at 90kbps at college. That is, I believe. 0.9Megs.
I ping 12, and I run just fine.
You'll be fine. _________________

I echo what they said; latency and bandwidth are two entirely different categories. No ISP can ever sell you 'better latency'; it is as good as it is, or it is as bad as it is.
The only way a lack of bandwidth can affect your latency is if you (or someone on your connection) is eating up a ridiculous amount of bandwidth AND you are not on a fiber connection; I.E. I could max out my FIOS at home - upload and download - and keep perfect latency, whereas my old DSL or current cable will start to get bad if someone is eating it all up.
If you aren't on a fiber connection, find out if someone on your connection uses a bittorrent client; if they do, make them limit it to about 1/2 of your maximum upload and 3/4 of your maximum download. That much use should prevent your latency from going to crap. You can find out your exact up and down at http://www.speedtest.net/ (try multiple places; some of the test sites have caps, which is silly, given what they are).
TL;DR, you are fine lowering bandwidth to save money, just make sure nobody on your connection is maxing it out with torrents. |
